Schools of Thoughts When psychology first emerged as a science separate from biology and philosophy, the debate over how to describe and explain the human mind and behavior began, than “Group of psychologists who became associated with the leader of a movement. They shared the same ideas about what psychology is and how it is to be studied.”
Schools of Thoughts The following are some of the major schools of thought that have influenced our knowledge and understanding of psychology: Structuralism Functionalism Behaviorism Gestalt Psychology Psychoanalysis Humanism / Humanistic Psychology Cognitivism/ Cognitive Psychology
Structuralism Structuralism is the first school of thought in psychology. This school focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components. The focus of structuralism was reducing of mental processes down into their most basic elements. Prominent personalities of structuralism : Wilhelm Wundt Edward Titchener.
Functionalism Functionalism school of thought was formed in the reaction of structuralism. This school of thought focuses upon the functions of elements of mental process. Prominent personalities of Functionalism: William James John Dewy Harvey Carr
Behaviorism Behaviorism suggests that all behavior can be explained by environmental causes rather than by internal forces. Behaviorism is focused on observable behavior. Prominent personalities of Behaviorism: John B Watson Ian Pavlov Throne Dike B.F Skinner
Gestalt psychology Gestalt School of thought focus on unified or whole rather than breaking down thought, mental process and behavior into small elements. Psychoanalysis Psychoanalysis is a school of psychology founded by Sigmund Freud. This school of thought emphasized the influence of the unconscious mind on behavior.
