What is Science Writing? Science Writing is the latest form of Philippine Journalism. In the era of fast-moving discoveries and inventions technological development and the computer age, Science Reporting is a must
Science reporting is Science writing by a scientist or a non scientist for mass consumption. His report is written for mass understanding. He writes his story in such a way that the science un oriented reader may understand and appreciate it because it is written in layman’s language
The aim of a Science Journalist is to render the very detailed, specific, and often jargon-laden information produced by scientists into a form that non-scientists can understand and appreciate, while still communicating the information accurately.
Sample Text FLOATING MONSTER OF THE SEA Mitigating the oil spill in Oriental Mindoro By Aries Oliver The scent of danger enveloped the coast of Pola, Oriental Mindoro on February 28, 2023, when the tanker MIT Princess Empress sank carrying 800,000 liters of industrial oil, the vessel suffered engine failure and sank in rough sea.
Sample Text Consequently, oil spilled in the sea water caused serious health and environmental hazards. According to Provincial Health Officer Cielo Ante, at least 43 people suffered nausea, headache, vomiting, and breathing difficulties. To prevent the spread of oil spills, the Philippine Coast Guard used a floating oil spill boom, a temporary floating barrier used to contain an oil spill. Jennifer Cruz, the mayor of Pola, told CNN Philippines that in the span of nine days, the oil spill is getting worse.
Top 5 Tips for Writing Science 1) Know why you are writing science and technology Great science and technology writing asks big “What if..?” questions that allow us to play with the day-to-day realities of our own world by exploring different realities in worlds we create. by Robert Grant
It examines big issues and asks difficult questions about things that concern us all – pollution, technology, globalization, genetic engineering, overpopulation – and does it without pointing directly at an individual or group.
2) Are you writing in a setting or a genre? All genres have their particular story beats. Know your primary genre and write to the beats of that genre first.
3) Know your science and technology world All science and technology topics are actually exploring the present no matter when it is set.
4) Get the science right – or as right as necessary The science always matters – even if it’s totally made up – but it really matters when you’re depicting things the audience know. If your story features a space shuttle launch you should know the launch procedure. If a character describes a scientific principal, make sure you get it right.
5) Don’t write ludicrous and nonsensical dialogue There will always be jargon associated with science-fiction, but what science writers must avoid is nonsensical faux-technology and pompous, ludicrous-sounding names for things.
If you’re ever tempted to write a line like “They’ve re-interpolated the quantum field transmission data and reverse-engineered the resulting Heisenberg matrix to calculate our vector ”,
just remember that “They’ve found us!” is easier to say, has greater impact and makes sense to everyone who hears it.
Sample Text TIDES OF CHANGE Facing the dangers of ocean pollution By John Mathew Marquez First Place-SciTech Writing NSPC 2018 In a world with oceans filled with rolling garbage and waste, how will the Philippines survive? Ocean pollution is a rampant issue in our society.
Tides of Change According to the agency Ocean Conservancy, millions of plastic bags, water bottles, cigarette butts, bottle caps, and other waste are thrown into the oceans each year. These water wastes are difficult to decompose, therefore turning our oceans into landfills. Aside from the adverse range of the adverse range of health risks such as amoebiasis that can be contracted by those who ingest the polluted water, ocean pollution also causes environmental damages to numerous coastal areas.
Tides of Change The beauty of many natural scenic spots is being damaged by the waste brought by ocean pollution. The environmental damages of ocean pollution cause a chain reaction with a nation’s economy. Polluted coastal areas affect local tourism, such as lessening the number of flights to these areas. Local businesses that depend on tourism are also affected by the decrease in the number of tourists present.
Tides of Change Wildlife is also affected by ocean pollution. Birds living near coastal areas consume bottle caps and other waste, mistaking them for a viable food source. However, the birds cannot digest these materials, and as a result, they soon die of starvation. Turtles are also affected by pollution. They consume plastic bags, which resembles the turtles’ natural prey-jellyfish. Just like the birds, they cannot digest the waste, and die soon afterwards.
Tides of Change World efforts are now focused on solving this issue. Annually, a world coastal cleanup event is held to rid the shorelines and coastal areas of any garbage present. Divers are also given a task of cleaning the seabed and further depths of the ocean of any waste they find.
Tides of Change The Philippines is a nation that is greatly affected by ocean pollution. Our country has various coastal areas which are an asset to tourism. Sadly, ocean pollution has become a significant threat. For example, Boracay, once a pristine area of clear waters and clean sand, is now plagued by the amount of trash that washes on its shores.
Tides of Change The tides of change are upon us, and we must strive to make our ocean cleaner not just for our society but also for the future generation to come
