Science Process Skills are skills needed to gather information that will answer the questions.
PROCESS SKILLS Observation Classification Inferring Hypothesizing Experimenting Communicating Predicting
OBSERVATION
WHAT IS OBSERVATION? Observing is the process of gathering information about objects or event in your natural surroundings. Qualitative observations - observations that are made using only the senses. Ex: color, shape, texture, smell, taste, and sound Quantitative observations – provide more accurate and precise information. Ex: The table feels smooth. The board is green.
CLASSIFICATION
vertebrates WHAT IS CLASSIFICATION? Classifying is a science process skill that involves the grouping of objects based on a particular property or defined criteria. animals vertebrates invertebrates
INFERRING
WHAT IS INFERRING? Drawing an idea or conclusion based on an observation or statement. A logical inference is reasonable. An illogical inference is one that assumes too much from the evidence.
HYPOTHESIZING
WHAT IS HYPOTHESIZING? A hypothesis is a potential answer or solution to your research questions. It is an educated guess.
EXPERIMENTING
Experimentation is the act or process of trying out a new procedure, idea, or activity.
COMMUNICATING
Communicating is sharing ideas and information about what you discovered in science. We can share information showing a table, chart, or graph, by writing report, by demonstration models, or by reporting orally. WHAT IS COMMUNICATING?
Written or Spoken Words: Spoken words are used in oral communication. Example: face to face conversion Written signs or symbols are used in written communication
Drawings and Illustrations: Drawing is a means of expression. It is a form of communication just the same as speaking is a form of communication, the process of placing your ideas on paper , and a skill that can be used in many work situations. An Illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process.
Tables and Charts Tables and charts are also useful in recording and presenting your data and observations.
PREDICTING
WHAT IS PREDICTING? Predicting is using one’s knowledge to make an intelligent guess about what will happen next. Predictions are made by searching for a pattern about what has happened.
