Unit 5: Does matter really matter? 5th Grade

Matter Matter is everything around you . Anything that takes up space and has mass is matter . Matter is formed by tiny particles called atoms . Two or more atoms of the same element form a molecule . Atoms of two or more elements form a compound . Matter exists in three common states : solid , liquid , and gas .

Lesson 1: How is matter measured?

The SI System Scientists measure things all the time to get important data. Because of this , it’s important that all scientists use the same language or system to measure things . The International System of Units (SI) is the worldwide metric system used in Science . Matter can be measured by its charateristics : volumen, mass , density , and temperature .

Volume and Capacity Volume refers to the amount of space that matter takes up. To measure a solid , you can use a ruler to measure its length , width , and height and then multiply them . Since liquids don’t have a definite shape , its volumen is measured with a measuring container. The quantity of a liquid that a container can hold is called capacity .

Mass Versus Weight Mass is the amount of substance or matter within an object . Weight is the measure of the strength of the force of gravity on an object . Mass stays the same no matter where the object is measured , but weight can change .

Density Density refers to how much matter an object has in relation to its volume . An object with high density has its particles tightly packed together . An object with low density has its particles very loosely packed in relation to its volumen.

Temperature Temperature measures heat . It refers to the kinetic energy ( motion ) of atoms in a substance . It determines how cold or hot things are.

Lesson 2: What are sieving and dissolving ?

Pure Substances Matter can be classified not only by its states ( solid , liquid , and gas), but also by its components . It can be classfied as a pure substance or as a mixture. A pure substance cannot be broken into smaller parts by chemical changes . They can be divided into elements and compounds . Elements are the building blocks of all the matter . Ex. oxygen , gold , and mercury . Compounds are molecules made of combinations . Ex. water or salt .

Mixtures Two or more substances blended together make a mixture . Mixtures can be: Homogeneous – when components are mixed together uniformly Heterogenous – where its components are mixed unevenly . Mixtures can be separated by physical or chemical processes .
