9/26/2024 1 SCIENCE 7 ELEMENTS AND COMPOUNDS

Hello dear learners, I am teacher Aiza your science teacher,Do you know, that I have something exciting for you today? But before that let me tell the things we need to realize in our todays lesson

:Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds OBJECTIVES: Differentiates elements and compounds ; Classifies substances into elements or compounds ; and Shows appreciation of the elements and compounds by giving an example .

1.What have you observed in the picture? 4. Is it an element? Or a compound? Lets know about this for our topic today Questions: 2. What are the gases present in air? 3. What type of pure substance is the gas you are referring to?

ELEMENT Pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means. It consists of only one kind of atom.

Elements are arranged in increasing atomic number across the periodic table. PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS The periodic table shows 118 elements, including metals (blue), nonmetals (red), and metalloids (green).

MAJOR CATEGORIES OF ELEMENTS Metals  shiny , good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable (can be hammered into thin sheets), ductile ( can be drawn into thin wires). Examples : Iron (Fe) , Copper (Cu) 2. Nonmetals  dull , poor conductor of heat and electricity , brittle and unmalleable. Examples: Neon (Ne) , Bromine (Br) 3. Metalloids  have properties of both metals and nonmetals. Examples: Silicon (Si) , Boron (B)

ELEMENT SYMBOL USES Oxygen O This is the gas that everyone needs for breathing. Carbon C It is used for fuel and as a lead of pencils which are very essential to students. Iron Fe This is used in making appliances , utensils and building supports . Chlorine Cl This is used as a disinfectant, mostly used as a cleaning material. Hydrogen H It is an element needed to produce water. Calcium Ca It is the mineral that makes up bones and teeth. Iodine I This is needed to maintain thyroid gland. ELEMENTS THAT ARE USED IN DAILY LIFE

COMPOUNDS Pure substance that can be broken down into a simpler type of matter (elements) by chemical means . It consists of atoms of two or more different elements  bound together .

Definite Composition of Compounds A molecule of a compound has a definite number of atoms. Consider the elements of hydrogen and oxygen. If one atom of oxygen and two atoms of hydrogen combine, the resulting compound is water . This is the most important compound in the universe.

COMPOUNDS SYMBOL USES Water It is used for drinking, cleaning, washing, cooking and other activities . Sodium Chloride It is use to give flavor to our food. Calcium Carbonate It is used as a building material and a component of mortar. Hydrochloric Acid It is an acid found in the stomach. It primarily aids digestion. Compounds that are used in daily life

Element  contains only one kind of atom. Compound  contains two or more kinds of atom.

I. Classify the following substances below. State if it is an element or compound. Element LET’S WRAP IT UP… 1. Nitrogen (N) 2. Ammonia (NH 3 ) Compound 3. Water (H 2 O) Compound 4. Carbon (C) Element 5. Tin (Sn) Element 6. Silver (Ag) Element 7. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) Compound

LET’S WRAP IT UP! II. MULTIPLE CHOICE: Underline the correct answer. 1. It is a good conductor of electricity. a. Non-metals b. Metals c. Metalloids d. Compounds 2. It has a property of both metals and non-metals. a. Non-metals b. Metals c. Metalloids d. Compounds 3. It contains only one kind of atom. a. Elements b. Compounds c. Molecules d. Metals 4. It is an acid found in the stomach. It primarily aids digestion. a. Calcium carbonate b. Citric acid c. Sodium chloride d. Hydrochloric acid
