NDLEA The NDLEA (National Drug Law Enforcement Agency) in June 2022 stated that “no fewer than 29.4 million Nigerians aged 15-64 years abuse psychoactive substances and other dangerous drugs.”

INTRODUCTION Drug abuse means using drugs in a way that is harmful to the body or mind, which may involve taking a drug without a doctor’s prescription, taking it in excessive amounts, or using illegal substances such as marijuana, cocaine, or tramadol.

EXAMPLES OF COMMONLY ABUSED DRUGS Cigarettes and tobacco Alcohol Marijuana (weed) Tramadol and codeine syrup Cocaine and heroin Inhalants (sniffing glue, paint, petrol fumes)

CAUSES OF DRUG ABUSE Peer pressure Curiosity Lack of parental guidance Exposure to drugs Depression Influence from social media and movies

SIGNS OF DRUG ABUSE IN TEENAGERS Sudden changes in behaviour or mood Loss of interest in school or activities Poor academic performance Red eyes, shaky hands, or poor coordination Staying away from family or new suspicious friends Stealing or lying to get money for drugs Rudeness or Disrespect to elders

DANGERS IN DRUG ABUSE Damage to the brain, liver, and heart Weak immune system Mental illness (psychosis or madness) Sleep problems and loss of appetite Depression and anxiety Poor concentration and memory loss

PREVENTION OF DRUG ABUSE Choose good friends who have positive habits 01 Learn to say “No” to peer pressure 02 Always seek help when you feel stressed or sad 03 Follow medical advice before taking any drug 04 Avoid staying alone or idle 05 Screen the social media pages you follow 06

CONCLUSION Drug abuse is harmful to the body, mind, and future. It leads to addiction, sickness, crime, and failure. Prevention is better than cure — stay away from drugs!
