Definition of fruit crop and plantation crop FRUIT CROP Fruit crops are traditionally defined as woody or herbaceous perennials that produce edible fruits Plantation crop
A group of commercial crops of perennial nature, cultivated extensively in Tropical and subtropical situations which need employment of labour through out the year and The produces of which are usually consumed after processing. Plantation crops are those which are cultivated on extensive Scale like tea, coffee and rubber.
Classification of fruit crop Temperate fruits Temperate fruit plants are exacting in their climate requirement.
They are grown only in place where winter is distinctly cold These fruit plants are generally deciduous and stand frost. E.g. apple, almond, Peach, pear, plum, strawberry, apricot, persimmon, cherimoya, pecan nut, walnut Tropical fruit Tropical fruit plants are generally evergreen and are extremely sensitive to cold. The plants are generally grown in climatic conditions prevailing in the region Between the tropic of cancer (230 (27) N latitude) and the tropic of Capricorn (230 (27) S latitude). e.g ; mango, banana, papaya, sapota , etc.,
Area , production and productivity Sub-tropical fruits The fruit crops grown under a climatic condition between temperate and the Tropical are known as subtropical fruit crops Example; grape, citrus, durian, jackfruit
IMPORTANCE of fruit crop High productivity: High yield per unit area: From a unit area of land more yield is realized From fruit crops than any of the agronomic crops. High net profit: Though, the initial cost of establishment of an orchard is high, it is Compensated by higher net profit due to higher productivity or high value of produce. Source of raw material for agro based industries: Fruit farming provides raw materials For various agro based industries- canning and preservation (fresh fruits), coir industries (coconut husk), Efficient utilization of resources: Growing of fruits being perennial in nature, enables Grower to remain engaged throughout the year in farm operations and to utilize fully the Resources & assets like machinery Utilization of waste and barren lands for production: Although, most of the fruits crops Require perennial irrigation and good soil for production, there are many fruit crops which Are hardy in nature, Mango, Ber , Cashew, Custard apple,
SCOPE OF CULTIVATION OF FRUITS Need to Increase Production to Meet Dietary Requirements: According to ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) the per capitaConsumption of fruits in India is 120g/day Scope for Increasing Area under Dry Land Fruits: It is not entirely true that all the fruits enquire perennial irrigation. There areMany fruit trees like ber , custard apple, cashewnut , anola et Increasing Urbanization and Change in Food Habits:Increasing urbanization due to industrial growth has increased demands for fruits Increasing Cold Storage Facilities and Precooling Centers:Fruits are highly perishable and have less shelf-life. During the peak harvestingPeriod the market gluts reduce prices of fruits . Scope for Export of Fruits:Market surveys in Europe and other markets have revealedthat is a good scope orExport of grapes, mango, banana, pomegranate, citrus, ber , cashew to gulf and EuropeanMarkers . The availability of these markets would be increase area under these fruits.
