WHAT IS WEED ? In general weed is the any plant where it is not wanted . Weeds are the plants which are undesirable, persistent, damaging and interfere with human activities ,agriculture and natural processes and economy of the country.

CLASSIFICATION OF WEEDS

SEDGES A grasslike plant with triangular stems and inconspicuous flowers , growing typically in a wetland. Sedges are widely distributed throughout the world. These are the perennial in nature.

4 most important sedge weeds in rice are, Cyperus iria Cyperus difformis Cyperus rotundus Fimbristylis miliacea

Cyperus iria , ( Oosi korai ) Erect Smooth Densely tufted Annual sedge 20-70 cm tall.

Cyperus difformis – Vatta korai Smooth Tufted Annual sedge Prolific seed production 20 – 60 cm tall

Cyperus rotundus - Koraikizhangu Erect Tuber forming Perenninal sedge Persistent Produces many tubers 15 – 20 cm tall

Fimbristylis miliacea - Poongorai Erect Tufted Annual sedge Produce many seeds and germinate throughout the season. 20-70 cm tall.
