Effects of electrostatic field treatments This treatment forms positive and negative dipole in cytoplasm, where water uptake by seeds is improved due to dipole nature of water and increases germination Hydroxil radical are activated under the influence of electric field that leads to intensification of biological processes Increases enzyme system like amylase and auxins , gibberlins , cytokinin are activated by alteration of ultra-structural elements through the breakage of hydrogen bond For biochemical aspects, lipid peroxidation is reduced which resulted in lowering free radicals and enhancing speed of germination At nucleotide level, this treatment enhances gene activation and increase in mRNA synthesis in turn helps to enzyme synthesis and three fold increase in germination UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES DHARWAD, KARNATAKA, INDIA www.uasd.edu 4

UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES DHARWAD, KARNATAKA, INDIA Electrostatic field treatment with 3 kV cm -1 for 90 seconds (P1D2)found to be the best treatment to enhance the seed quality attributes of marginal/poor seed lots of onion followed by 60 seconds exposure (P1D1) All Biochemical parameters enhanced at 3 kV cm -1 for 90 seconds (P1D2) followed by 3 kV cm -1 for 60 seconds Higher power intensity and higher duration have little effect when compared to untreated control Conclusion www.uasd.edu 6

UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES DHARWAD, KARNATAKA, INDIA I thankfully acknowledge UAS, Dharwad to carryout the present research work and providing financial support to attend this conference. Department of Agricultural Engineering, MPKV, Rahuri for providing electrostatic equipment for seed treatment. Acknowledgement www.uasd.edu 7
