As both a method of instruction and a topic of instruction, the impact of computers and technology on social studies is immense.

Through the computer, students may gain access to expansive knowledge links and broaden their exposure to diverse people and perspectives; hence, affording students the opportunity to become active participants in an increasingly global and interactive world.

TEACHING AIDS IN TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES Meaning of Teaching Aids: In the teaching of social studies at upper primary level teaching material serve as a means to help a teacher to introduce or explain a topic effectively. Fair or well-planned teaching takes place in the presence of teaching aid only. Teaching material makes the teaching-learning process interesting by breaking the dullness in the classroom. Effective teaching aids increase the process of the teaching-learning process. Teaching material activates the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of students learning.
Purpose of using teaching-learning materials: Various serves the purpose of using teaching-learning material in social science teaching: Teaching-learning materials helps in making learning easy. Teaching-learning materials helps in making learning to remain in the minds of the learners for a longer time. Teaching-learning materials helps in making the lesson more interesting.
Purpose of using teaching-learning materials: Teaching-learning materials enable the teacher to express the intended concepts of learning effectively. Teaching aids in social studies helps in illustrating natural phenomena like volcano, rain, earthquake etc. Teaching aid in social studies teaching helps to define an idea, concept in a better way. For example: to explain the direction in a map or on a globe. Teaching aid is helpful in refreshing and reinforcing students learning when there is a difficulty in creating real atmosphere or situation related to the topic.
Characteristics of teaching Aids: Teaching aids should be up to date in every aspect. Teaching aids should be simple, improvised from time to time. Teaching aids should be exact and truthful. Teaching aids should be informative and according to the mental level of the students.
Classification of teaching aids: Teaching aids are of three types: AUDIO AIDS are those aids of teaching which we can hear only. These aids make the use of hearing sense only. 2. VISUAL AIDS -These aids make the use of learner’s visual sense or organs only.
Classification of teaching aids: 3. AUDIO VISUAL AIDS These are the aids in which learners makes the use of hearing as well as the visual senses of the learners. These aids help in attaining the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains of the learners.
Selection of Teaching Aids: Teaching aids should be child-centered and able to make learning easy for the child. Teaching aids orders should be selected in such a way that is able to fulfill the educational objectives. Teaching aid should select according to the interest and aptitude of the learner.

Disadvantages of teaching aids: Teaching aid is expensive to implement. Teaching aids distracts the attention of the learners from the instructor or teachers. For employing an audio-visual aid, the size of the room should be taken into consideration. Classroom size should not be so large or should not be so small. It should according to the strength of the students Audiovisual consumes a lot of time while implementing.
Audio-Visual Teaching Material: Audiovisual aids are those learning materials which use both the senses of learners i.e. hearing, visual, audiovisual aids are of following types: Television: Nowadays, TV is one of the best teaching material that provides information related to various social science topics. 2. Educational films: Audiovisual aids affects all the domains of learning of students. An educational film is the audio-visual aid of teaching. Educational films help in a faster and deeper understanding of the topics of social science such as historical films related to various national political leaders, freedom fighters etc.

Norwood (1949) observes that “though there are vast quantities of Social Studies materials, yet there are two important considerations which the teacher must face in using these aids effectively – the teacher must know where he can find them and must select those materials which will best fit his particular needs”. Teaching resources in Social Studies mean anything that can assist the teacher in promoting teaching and learning.

In its most rigid form a textbook represents a series of lessons which demands the teacher’s initiative. 2. Newspapers Raymond (1965) observed that “since many Social Studies teachers direct the attention of their classes frequently to contemporary problems and to tropical issues which can be woven into the on-going course of study, they can make significant contribution to enlightened citizenship by examining newspaper with the student”.

While pictures stimulate interest, create correct impression and bring lesson to life, charts, on the other hand, are valuable in the presentation of materials to be taught in their simplest form. 4. Maps The studying, drawing and interpreting of maps are activities essential in the teaching of Social Studies. Maps indicate economic and physical features, location of places, political boundaries cultural limitations, occupational zones etc.

Real Object The category of materials resources that can be valuable in the teaching of Social Studies is the use of the actual or real object in the classroom. These things are called REALIA and can have a powerful impact on students’ interest and motivate them to learn.

But generally, it refers to a place or space where the students and teachers may find information and instructional materials not available in the classroom 8.Audio-Visual Devices There is at present varieties of instructional tools known as audiovisual devices and materials. The application of these instructional tools range from the use of small cameras by an instructor to show close – ups within his classroom to an airborne studio broadcasting to many states. 9.Chalkboard The chalkboard or the blackboard is the commonest visual aid ‘utilized by the teacher. The chalkboard is used to write outline or summary, to illustrate what the teacher intends to t each and to draw sketches, maps and pictures.
