Teacher Sue Ace's Mum Ace's Dad

H was a sunny Wednesday morning, when SPARK
frienz arrived in their classroom.

It is time for Teacher Sue's Moral Values class
again. The students were eagerly waiting for the
new topic of the day.

"Today, the new topic is about honesty.” Teacher
Sue told them. "Honesty is about telling the truth
even when it is hard. We should not lie to please
others or not wanting to face the truth. Being
honest also means taking responsibility for our
actions.”

satrap td

Ace raised his hand eagerly. "It is good to be
honest as we can just be ourselves and say what
we really feel. The other person also gets to
know our true feelings and thoughts.”

"That is a great example, Ace.” Teacher Sue
repeated that it is important to be honest
about what you are thinking or doing at all times.

Meanwhile, Ping saw Ace's frowning face. "This is
the first time seeing Ace looking sad in class.
Maybe | should ask him about it later.” Ping said
to himself.

satrap td

The friends sat together during their break, and
Ping noticed Ace looking sad again.

"What happened, Ace? You look unhappy.” Ping
asked, concerned.

“| thought | was not not being honest with my
parents about my love for comics. | have been
telling them | enjoy reading in the library, but for
the last two months | have been reading comics
instead." Ace confessed.

tr ep td

"You should have been honest, Ace! It is not good
to keep things from your parents and especially
from us, your good friends!" Rain scolded gently.

“| know, but reading comics makes me happy and
relaxed! | mean, the drawings and actions are so
much fun. For the other books, it is hard to
understand sometimes as it has too many
words!" Ace explained.

satrap td

"We understand what you are going through,
Ace; even | have a hard time understanding what
| am reading when there are no drawings. There
are many types of books you can find in the
library, and there is nothing wrong with choosing
something that you like, including a comic book,”
Shine said.

Ace's parents know he loves to read, and he tells
them it is one of his favorite things to do. They
trust him to read freely. Ace assured them he

trs sd

would go for story or adventure books and only
read comics when he had free time. He hid the
fact that reading comics was fun for him.

"You should tell them your real interest and what
you have been reading, It is not right to hide it
from them," Kit suggested.

Ping added, "Reading comics is not wrong, Ace.
However, | do not agree with your behaviour when
you hide the truth from your parents. They
would be disappointed.”

trs sd

"Have we learned anything today about being
honest? We should tell others, especially our
parents, what we feel or think,” Rain reminded

Ace.

“always tell my parents and siblings what | think
or feel. | do not act or pretend. If they disagree,
I will tell them how | feel. | do not keep things

from them," Shine shared.

tra engin

The other friends look at Shine with a smile.
They knew Shine was a lucky child as she was
free to do whatever she liked.

"| am going to tell my parents the truth. It is
good to tell them about what I like." Ace assured
his good friends.

Ace went home and waited for his parents for
dinner that night.

"Dad, Mum, | have something to tell you,” Ace
said.

"Yes, darling! Is it about school?" Mum asked.

"You know | love reading. However, my real
interest is in reading comics. | have not been
reading stories or adventure books as | have told
you," Ace said in a bold tone.

trs sd

Ace felt relieved after saying what he needed. He
was ready to accept any scolding or punishment
from his parents.

"This surprises me as it is not what you told us.
While comics are fun, it is important to
remember that reading different types of books
can be helpful to you too. There are so many
things to learn, and that is why different
authors are working so hard to share their
knowledge with others," Dad commented.

10

tra engin

“Sweetie, we will not punish you for sharing your
true interest. It is right to be open and tell the
truth. We are happy that you are honest,” Mum
gave Ace a warm hug as she spoke.

“Mum, | learned about honesty today; it is a good
trait | want to practice every day. That is why I
must tell you about what | am doing and not hide
anything from you again," Ace said.

"Son, honesty is what everyone should practice.
There are times when a person may choose to
hide things from someone. However, hiding the
truth means you do not believe in sharing with
that person. We are your parents, and you
should always trust us. We will try to understand
you," Dad replied.

Honesty is wha’
everyone shoul

"But what would happen if one of you became
disappointed in me?” Ace asked.

“It is natural for everyone to be disappointed at
something. However, for every disappointment,
there is always a way to solve the problem. Just
like what you did earlier to tell us that you were
reading comics in the library instead of other
books. If you like comics, your mother and |
understand as we also want you to fill your life
with some fun," Dad added.

Lalso used to read

“Agree. Even when | was your age, | got bored with
reading, | also read comics when | was young
because they brought me joy! There is nothing to
be worried!” Mum replied.

“Mum, Dad, thank you for your understanding, |
promise to be very honest and not hide anything
from you," Ace said to his parents while he gave
both of them a hug.

“Well then, | think it is time for you to go to bed.
You have school tomorrow!” Dad replied.

Ace went upstairs to his bedroom and lay on his
bed, feeling happy.

“Wow, so this is why it is important to be honest
with someone. Building trust with people is very
important. Everyone can choose to be honest,”
Ace said to himself as he closed his eyes.

Ace felt happy. He reminds himself to go to the
library tomorrow so he can start reading more
books.

It was Thursday morning. Ping, Shine, Rain, and
Kit were eating their snacks in the canteen.

"| wonder where Ace is?” Ping asked.

“Oh, | saw him reading in the library! However,
this time, he was reading a book, while his comic
books were lying around his table!" Kit said.

"Let us give him some time to read. | know that
Ace is adjusting himself from reading comics to
books. He can do it!” Shine replied.

Should we go to the

library?

"Should we go to the library to join him? There is
still some time before the bell rings, and | also
feel like reading too!” Rain asked cheekily.

All the friends agreed and went to the library to
find Ace.

"Hey Ace!" Ping greeted him. Ace saw his friends
coming and started clearing his table.

"How did you find me here, guys?” Ace asked.

"Well, | saw you through the window, reading a
book! We thought we would join you. Would it be
nice if we could read together?" Kit replied.

How did you
find me here?

Ace is glad of his friend's thoughtfulness. They
walked around the library to find a book they

liked and sat at the same table with Ace. As they
began to read, the bell rang signaling them to
return to class.

“Looks like we need to get back to our classroom!
Shall we?" Shine said.

The friends put their books back on the shelves
and walked back to their classrooms.

Librarian Teacher Sue Elite Student

CT

It was a big day for Shine; she was the new
champion of the National Art Competition,
proudly representing her school to win
against seventy-eight other participants
from other schools.

The next day in school, Shine received a big
warm welcome as the principal presented her
award-winning drawing in front of a large
crowd of students.

CT

"We are very proud of Shine's achievement in
winning this national competition!” The
principal said to the rest of the students and
invited Shine to give a speech.

Shine began her speech with gratitude, "First
of all, | want to thank each and every one of
you for being here today. None of this will be
possible without the wonderful support of my
friends. | want to give a special thanks to Ace,

CT

Ping, Rain, and Kit. When | almost wanted to
give up on drawing; they encouraged me and
told me not to give up. They motivated me to
work harder. | also want to thank Teacher Sue
for her support and for allowing me to join in
the competition.”

The rest of the students cheered for her
loudly. The SPARK frienz clapped as loudly as
they could, as they all were very proud of
Shine for giving a heartening speech.

CT

After the ceremony, Shine went back to class
where her classmates continued to clap,
cheering for their class hero.

Teacher Sue started the class by praising
Shine, "| am happy for your achievement,
Shine. It was great hearing your humble
speech. It is good that you remembered those
who have supported you.”

re nied

During recess, many schoolmates invited
Shine to sit with them. Many of them were
very excited to speak to her about being the
national champion. However, Shine humbly
turned down their offer as she wanted to
continue to sit with her friends.

“Whoa, Shine, | never thought that you would
refuse to sit with the elite of our school!” Rain
said to Shine.

CT

"Come on, guys! Without your encouragement,
| may not even join the competition!” Shine
gratefully reply.

“it was a great speech! | could not stop
smiling until Rain pointed it out to me! You are
really humble!” Kit praised Shine.

“That is Shine! We know she will always be with
us and remain our best friend!” Ace added.

CT

Ping added in, “Shine remains humble even
after being the national champion. She has not
forgotten us; we supported and encouraged
her when she almost gave up. Her hard work
and efforts made her come this far, too."

| spoke from
the heart...
N ©

"| spoke from the heart. | used to be proud and
difficult; but all of you are the ones who helped
me becoming better, telling me what | should

CT

or should not do. Without learning from all of
you, | will continue to be the spoiled kid who
does not appreciate what | have, despite being
more fortunate than many others,” Shine
reflected.

The SPARK friends high-fived each other to
show their appreciation.

After the meal, the friends decided to go to
the library since they had some free time. As
they entered the library, some of the
students waved to Shine.

CT

Shine smiled back at each of her schoolmates,
making sure to smile at each student who
waved at her.

"Shine, you can take this seat near the air
conditioner,” one student said to Shine as he
was offering his seat for her and her group.

"No, thank you! You were here first, so you
should keep your seat and do not need to offer
it to me!” Shine replied.

CT

“What about this book, Shine? It is one of my
favorites from the library. You can read it
first if you like,” another student offered her
book to Shine.

"That is very kind of you but you may keep
reading. | will find something to read later!”
Shine replied.

The SPARK friends finally saw an empty table
and sat down. Ping and Shine start to look for
their books. Shine saw a student asking a
group of students to leave their table. He told
them that was his usual seat.

10

CT

The group of students refused to leave and he
shouted at them, "We are from the school
sports team! We have been winning trophies
for the school. Give us back our regular seats

Shine stepped forward and calmly said,
“Thank you for your contribution to the
school. However, the library seats are always
on a first-come-first-serve basis."

CT

Ping joined in and said, "You may be the sport's
elite; however, we are all equal here. It is
important to be humble so that everyone will
respect you. Respect is not gained by creating
fear in others," Ping added.

You are a
weirdo!

"You are a weirdo! Who are you to tell us what
to do? We will do what we like." The student
scolded Ping. "Leave now before | start to show
you my fist."

12

Another student started asking the rest of
the students to leave the table immediately.

The two groups continued shouting at each
other until Shine stood in the middle and
asked both groups to calm down.

“Calm down, please! Be kind with your words.
Can we please stop shouting at each other?
We are all schoolmates; we can always talk
nicely to each other. This library is for
everyone,” Shine reminded everyone.

The librarian walked towards the group after
she heard noises, "What is going on here? You
are in the school library and this is a place for
quiet reading. You all need to be quiet at all
times,” she replied.

Shine responded, "| am sorry, librarian. | think
there is some confusion with the groups. No
one was trying to disturb the rest.”

14

CT

The students began to move away; with some
leaving the library.

Outside the library, the students sitting at
the table came forward to thank Shine and
her friends for helping them.

“Why did they behave like that? Just because
they are the sport's elite, it does not mean
they get special rights in school. Shine, thank
you for standing up for us. You are so different
from them even though you are an elite, too,"
one student commented.

15

"No, no! | am just like any of us here. My
winning at the drawing competition does not
make me an elite. | feel happy to represent
the school; | am grateful for the chance more
than anything.” Shine replied humbly.

"Yes, Shine is very humble. She does not feel
that she deserves anything more than
others. We should all feel equal and the same.”
Ace praised his friend.

"Shine is still herself regardless of whether
she wins or loses the competition. Being a
national champion does not make you
different from others. Teacher Sue taught us
to always be humble; we should not change our
behaviour just because we have achieved
something.” Ping added.

The school librarian overheard the issue and
thanked SPARK frienz, saying "Thank you for

they can learn from Shine about being
humble.”

"will find a way to speak to them again when
I can. It is important for them to understand
why humility matters and to see themselves
and everyone else the same.” Shine said.

The bell rang; it was time to get back to class.
The SPARK friends talked about other
examples of humility on their way to the class.

18

CT

As you succeed in life, stay humble and grateful
to those who supported you from the start.
Being humble shows you are kind and attracts
good friendships. Just like Shine, who stayed
true to herself even after achieving success.

Teacher Sue discussed the importance of
patience in class this morning.

After the last lesson ended, the SPARK frienz left
school together.

“Teacher Sue talked about the importance of
patience. We should all try to learn and practice
it,” Rain reminded her friends.

"Yeah, it is important for everyone, even adults,”
Ping replied.

“Even adults?” Shine asked. "| thought my
parents mastered this when they were young.
They should be good at it."

Even adults?

ue
(ue AVAL,

"Not true, Shine. Patience is not something you
learn once. You have to practice and show
patience daily," Rain explained.

Rain's parents have always told her that being
patient is important. It helps her deal with people
and situations better.

Rain has two younger sisters who like things to
happen fast. It sometimes causes fights.

"| used to complain to my parents when they
made me wait longer than expected. They
reminded me to be patient and give others more
time. | did not like that," Shine commented.

N

I used to complain to
my parents....

Ping reminded everyone of what Teacher Sue had
said about being patient. She said it helps us try
harder even when things are hard and not get
upset if we wait.

"You are talking like Teacher Sue, Ping. She said
some things take longer, and we must deal with
challenges. It means we do not get what we want,”
Ace joked.

You are talking like
Teacher Sue, Ping.

“| agree. | always tell my twin sisters to be
patient. They demand things to be done quickly
and get upset with delays, blaming others,” Rain
nodded.

As the friends headed to the playground, they
saw an older lady waiting to cross the road.

=” er a

The old lady stood patiently, watching the cars.

"| remember seeing a car accident near our
school,” Kit said. "A young man got hit by a car
because he did not wait. He ended up getting
hurt."

"My mum always tells me to be patient when
baking bread,” Shine said. "I used to rush her, but
good bread takes time to bake.”

Being patient is
important.

“Being patient is important. We all need to use it
every day,” Ping said again. "It is not just for
children; even our parents should practice it.”

“Should we encourage our parents to practice
patience too? Let us observe and do it together,”
Rain suggested.

As they arrived at the playground, they ran
excitedly.

Suddenly, the sky darkened, and it started to
rain. “Oh no, it is raining!” Ping shouted.

“What are we going to do?” Rain asked.

“Let us go to the store and wait for the rain to
stop." Kit suggested.

Let us go to
the store...

“Phew, that was a close one! | almost got wet!"
Ping said.

How long do we
have to wait here?

“How long do we have to wait here?” Rain asked.

"heard on the news that today is supposed to be
sunny, so the rain should stop soon,” Kit told
everyone.

As they waited, Ace kept asking. "How long is it
going to last? | am bored already.”

How long is it
going to last?

"Remember we talked about the importance of
patience? We are stuck in the store due to the
rain. This is our chance to practice patience
rather than just talk about it,” Rain said to Ace.

“Speaking of patience, why not we play a game
called | Spy?" Kit suggested to his friends.

“What is that?" Ace asked.

“lam going to look for something outside and

you say ‘frisbee’ if you see it too,” Kit explained.

"Okay, can | start? | spy something red!" Kit
announced.

"Is it Ace?" Shine joked.

cE

"No," Kit laughed.

“ls it the red car across the street?" Ping
guessed.

“Correct! You have one point, Ping!” Kit said.

“Now it is your turn, Ping. since you answered
correctly. Let's keep playing until the rain stops,”

Kit said.

Now it is your turn, Ping.

Twenty minutes passed, and the SPARK frienz

noticed the sky getting brighter.

“Look! It stopped raining!" Ace shouted.

"| noticed, too!” Shine replied.

"See, everyone? Patience pays off. Even if the rain
disturbs us, staying patient brings better
things,” Rain explained.

“| get it now. Today, | learned that being stuck
here is not so bad when | am with my friends,”
Ping reflected.

The SPARK frienz hugged as the sky brightened.

“Well, time to head home." Kit said, checking the
time.

“Are we not playing in the playground?" Shine
asked,

“It is all wet from the rain. Let us go tomorrow,”
Ace suggested.

Are we not
playing...
SE S=7

2

“Exactly. There is always tomorrow. We can wait,”
Rain told everyone.

Since the rain had stopped, they headed home.

“Mum, | am back!" Rain announced as she entered
her house.

Rain's Mum rushed to hug her, surprised she was
not wet.

*Did you all find cover during the rain?" Rain's
Mum asked.

Did you find cover
during the rain?

"Yes, Mum! And today, | learned something
important,” Rain replied.

Patience is more
than a skill;
177

Ue

"What was it?" Rain's Mum asked.

“Patience is more than just a skill; we learned and
practiced it today. Also, | now know how to play I
Spy!" Rain replied.

Rain went upstairs to shower. She does not want
to get sick from the rain.

The following day, Rain's dad took her to school.

The traffic was bad.

Rain's dad did not honk because he knew he had
to wait. But the driver behind them honked
impatiently, thinking it was Rain's dad's fault for
the delay.

"Dad, that driver behind us is very impatient,”
Rain said after hearing the loud car horns.

We cannot rush in this situation. Honking would
not make things better,” Rain's dad responded.

"Good things always come to those who wait. Am |
right, Dad?" Rain asked.

“Correct. The traffic jam would clear up; we have
to wait,” Rain's dad replied.

“You see, this is why patience is important. It
is like waiting in line; you have to wait until it
is your turn," Rain's dad said as he turned into
the school compound.

Upon arrival, Rain noticed many of her
classmates had just arrived, seemingly stuck in
the same traffic.

“Lam going now, Dad. | love you!” Rain said as she
entered her school's gates.

Being patient is important if we want to
succeed in anything. Even if we are good at
something, rushing can stop us from doing our
best.
