Sentence Patterns

Sentence Patterns describes the arrangement and structure of words, including phrases and clauses, within a sentence to create a complete thought.

Basic part of a sentence Subject - Refers to the person or thing that does something in the sentence. Verb - The word in the sentence that expresses an action. Object - The person or thing that receives the action described by the verb.

Subject + Intransitive Verb (S+ I V) It is also a NOUN+VERB (N+V) Refers to the most basic English sentence pattern , where a subject (who or what the sentence is about) is followed by a verb (the action or state of being) PATTERN 1

Example: People Travel *Simple sentences represents what we call deep structure. PATTERN 1

Subject + Transitive Verb + Direct Object (S+ T V+ D O) The subject is the doer, the transitive verb is the action, and the direct object answers the questions "whom" or "what" in relation to the verb. PATTERN 2

Example: He reads a book They play basketball She cooks dinner S TV DO

Subject + Linking Verb + Complement (S+ L V+C) It also known as N+V+C The complement may either be used an adjective which tells something about the subject/noun that explains or means the same person or things as the subject. PATTERN 3

Subject (S) Refers to what is talked about Linking Verb (LV) Connects the subject to the complement. (is, are, am, was, were, has been, are being, might have been, become, seem, feel, appear, look, smell, taste, sound, and grow. Complement (C) A word that provides more information about the subject by either naming it (a predicate noun/pronoun) or describing it (a predicate adjective).

Example: Sky is smart They are the poets who started this style. subject linking verb complement

Subject + Transitive Verb + Indirect object - Direct Object (S+ T V+ IO+DO ) includes a subject, a transitive verb, an Indirect Object (for whom or to whom the action is done), and a Direct Object (the thing receiving the action) PATTERN 4

Example: Sarah gave the dog a biscuit Fate gave Josh a new jacket Granny left Gary all of her money S TV IO DO

Subject + Transitive Verb + Direct Object + Object Complement (S+ T V+ DO+OC ) The object complement is a noun or adjective that directly follows and describes or ranames the direct object. PATTERN 5

We Example: Noun We named our puppy Spots . The team elected Sarah captain. Adjective She found the movie boring . she painted her room green. S TV DO OC

Subject + Transitive Verb + Direct Object + Object Preposition (S+ T V+ DO+OP ) Object Preposition: A noun or pronoun that follows a preposition (like in, on, with, for, to, of) and completes a prepositional phrase. PATTERN 6

Subject + Transitive Verb + Direct Object + Object Preposition (S+ T V+ DO+OP ) The prepositional phrase functions as a modifier in the sentence, providing additional information about a person, place, or thing. PATTERN 6

We Example: She placed the book on the table. He put the keys in his pocket. The student wrote a letter to his parents S TV DO OP
