SGB EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE TRAINING

What is an Emergency? An emergency is a situation that poses an immediate risk to health, life, property or environment . Most emergencies require urgent intervention to prevent a worsening of the situation, although in some situations, mitigation may not be possible and agencies may only be able to offer palliative care for the aftermath. Emergency Preparedness and Response Why Emergency Preparedness ? To take prompt corrective actions to save lives and sufferings/injuries. To protect plant machines, equipment's & buildings etc. To protect loss of materials. To Protect and minimize property losses. To resume normal situation or operation within minimum possible time.

Categories of Emergency

Types of emergency Dangers to life 01 Dangers to the environment 02 Dangers to property 03 Dangers to health 04

Emergency Preparedness and Response Emergencies can create a variety of hazards for workers in the impacted area. Preparing before an emergency incident plays a vital role in ensuring that employers and workers have the necessary equipment, know where to go, and know how to keep themselves safe when an emergency occurs. KNOW your Emergency Numbers Know you Fire Extinguishers Know your emergency EXIT Know your Assembly area Get Trained in First Aid Fire Fighting CPR YOU CAN SAVE LIVES Carelessness ……can be DEADLY Emergency Numbers - 0567068311

Efficient accident response starts long before the accident occurs. Emergency telephone numbers must be posted near each job telephone, Keep the emergency numbers ( police, ambulance, civil defense, HSE ) First aid kits must be readily available and restocked weekly Check for it Everyone should be aware of co-workers who hold current first aid or advanced medical training credentials. Are there chemical, fire, or other physical hazards ( don’t work with it, I you are not trained ) Store hazardous chemicals in properly segregated containers. ( make it your practice) Prevent fires by maintaining good housekeeping Know where the nearest exits are and use them. Know where you should assemble outside (Emergency Assembly point) Get emergency training Be trained in CPR and First Aid so that you can help others if they are hurt. Know how to use a fire extinguisher safely Practice and drill emergency procedures so that you will be calm, capable, and prepared when emergency strikes .

FIRST CHECK THE AREA – Visually and mentally, to avoid becoming a rescue victim (look for electrical hazards or other life threatening conditions). STAY CALM - This will give the victim confidence and reduce fear. SURVEY THE VICTIM'S CONDITION - Stay with the victim while another person calls for professional help . STOP SEVERE BLEEDING - A tight compress works in most cases. RESTORE NATURAL BREATHING - can you perform C.P.R.? KEEP THE VICTIM LYING DOWN - cover the victim to conserve body heat and help prevent shock. CONTINUE ADMINISTERING FIRST AID - and offer encouragement. NEVER MOVE THE VICTIM - unless there is danger in that immediate area. Should an Emergency occur ….. Stay Calm, Keep Your presence of mind, try to understand what is the emergency and act accordingly ?

Emergency Team Responsibilities Responsibilities Prior to an emergency: Be familiar with your building evacuation plan and the basic emergency procedures Know the alert signals (fire alarm and voice alarm) Know the evacuation routes for your building Know where your unit’s first aid kit is located Have an up-to-date list of work unit members on a clipboard that is easily accessible If you have a cell phone, save the emergency number in your contacts and have the phone readily available If you have a two-way radio, be familiar with how to use it and make sure it is charged at all times Know who to contact with additional information about your work unit During an Emergency: Determine if it is an evacuation situation Take vest, clipboard, radio, cell phone and flashlight Move quickly and safely to ensure everyone in your area is evacuating using designated routes Sweep your work area to ensure everyone has exited the building If possible, do a quick check-in with adjacent areas to ensure they have evacuated Assist any people having difficulty exiting without compromising your own safety Close doors when leaving

Emergency Team Responsibilities Once Outside: Make headcounts using current time sheet. If someone is missing or injured Immediately inform to the Emergency services team, Keep track of work unit members Permit to work during emergency should be canceled Provide information and status updates to evacuees (if available) For those assigned as monitors, cover entrance area to keep people from re-entering the building. After the Emergency Make sure the fire alarm is off or there is an "all clear message" from the Voice Alert or Emergency Services before allowing people to re-enter. If no message is forthcoming, contact onsite emergency responder or one of the monitors Once back inside, make sure everyone is accounted for and ok

Building Evacuation Plan Process

EVACUATION STEPS: In the event of fire alarm or otherwise instructed to evacuate the building, the building occupants shall: Stop work and immediately evacuate the building. Do not assume it is a false alarm. Use stairs and don’t use elevators. Keep doors in stairway closed. Evacuate & proceed until you reach the Assembly Area. Stay in the Assembly Area & don’t re-enter the building until (All Clear) is announced by Fire Department or Security Personnel. Building Evacuation Plan Process

Building Evacuation Plan Process Evacuation Plan Drawings: All buildings shall have evacuation plan drawings posted at visible locations throughout the building. The drawings shall show the path to emergency exits and assembly area . Assembly Area(s): Each building shall have assigned assembly area(s) taking into consideration building size and occupancy load. The assembly area(s) shall be at a safe distance from the building and any other hazards,

Safety Signages & Symbols Emergency Eye Wash is used to quickly flush out hazardous substances, chemicals, or debris from the eyes First Aid Kit Box Used for immediate treatment of injuries and medical emergencies. 🚑

Safety Signages & Symbols A fire hose is used to deliver high-pressure water to extinguish fires, primarily for firefighting in emergencies. A fire extinguisher is used to put out small fires or control a fire in its early stages before it spreads.

USE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS The PASS method for using a fire extinguisher is a simple, step-by-step process to effectively put out a fire: Pull the Pin: Remove the safety pin from the handle to unlock the fire extinguisher. This prevents accidental discharge. Aim the Nozzle: Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not the flames. Aiming at the base ensures you target the source of the fire where it's most effective. Squeeze the Handle: Apply firm pressure to the handle to release the extinguishing agent. This will start discharging the contents of the fire extinguisher. Sweep from Side to Side: Move the nozzle or hose from left to right, sweeping across the base of the fire. Keep a steady motion until the fire is completely out. This helps to cover the entire area and ensures thorough extinguishing.
