RULES

Q1*) FITB & name the cricketer
The great Aussie commentator Bill Lawry coined the term ___
______ ____ (3,6,4) in 2016 to refer to an iconic celebration that
the Matraville Mauler - known for his aggressive batting - replicates
after a certain milestone.
The celebration involves him leaping up and punching the air -
whose shape and trajectory bears an uncanny resemblance to a
certain Japanese company’s trademark. Incidentally, when Lawry
coined this term, this company was the title sponsor for Cricket
Australia at that time.

A1. The Toyota Jump and David Warner

Q2) Give Funda
A rule prevailing in both rugby league and rugby union, this is a special
kind of substitution which can be used when players have to leave the
field due to a specific explicit reason, with occurrences being rather
common due to the physically demanding nature of the sport.
Teams have been known to misuse the rule by faking something for
tactical advantage, leading to perhaps the biggest controversy in rugby
in a match between Harlequins and Leinster in the 2009 Heineken Cup
quarter final.

A2. Blood Replacement
(The incident mentioned was known as the Bloodgate)

Q3*) ID the Bird/Inspiration
Angry Birds Go! is a game under Rovio
Entertainment’s famous franchise. This playable
bird was added in 2015 but was subsequently
removed in v2.0.
With the same ability as Chuck but slightly
faster, the bird can wear his iconic
yellow-and-green helmet if the player wins 41
races playing as him.

A3. Ayrton Senna (Senna bird)

Q4) Give funda about Rufus and what event?
Described as an important part of the ___________ family, Rufus has succeeded
Hamish in the important role that he has occupied for the past 15 years.
Rufus patrols the 42-acre grounds all around the year, with daily visits during
particularly two weeks in the years. This is to deter certain unwanted visitors
that are particularly attracted to the roof of centre court.
He has additionally in his impressive resume - worked at Westminster Abbey,
various hospitals, airfields and landfill sites. The “kidnapping” of Rufus on 28
June 2012 caused a “global outcry” making him “the world’s most notable ___”.
His Twitter and Facebook accounts are rather famous with his own _____ security
photocard pass.

A4. Rufus the Hawk is the official bird scarer at the Wimbledon

Q5) ID the moniker & What was renamed in their honour
Having won 18 Grand Slam singles titles cumulatively over a ten
year period in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the quartet of Jean
Borotra, Rene Lacoste, Jacques Brunon and Henri Cochet were
given this moniker, inspired by an 1844 Alexandre Dumas novel.
The quartet’s legacy was immortalised as Philippe Chatrier offered
jewellers in Paris an opportunity to redesign something, which was
renamed in the honour of the quartet.

A5. Moniker: The Four Musketeers
and the Men’s Singles French Open trophy was renamed in their
honour (a Coupe des Mousquetaires (English: The Musketeers'
Trophy)

Q6) ID the player & the nickname.
The origins of this particular nickname was when, during a turbulent period in
2004, the person was eager to shed the image imposed on him and redefine
himself. In a 2015 autobiographical documentary, he disclosed that he conceived
this persona to cope with personal challenges faced away from the court inspired
by the code name of a lethal assassin in an acclaimed 2003 film.
This legendary American athlete added, ‘If I create this alter ego, so now when I
play this is what’s coming out of your mouth, it separates the personal stuff,
right?’ You’re not watching David Banner – you’re watching the Hulk, ”
The nickname symbolises the agility, ruthlessness and precision in his playing
style.

A6. Kobe Bryant , The nickname : Black Mamba (Kill Bill)

Q7) ID the sport & the funda
In the world championships for this sport, a sport that we all must
have indulged in to show our physical prowess. The events in each
weight class give away not one but two golds, two silvers, and two
bronzes. Georgia’s Levan Saginashvilli is considered the GOAT with
seven world titles.

A7. Arm Wrestling and there are left-handed and right-handed
divisions and awards in each weight category

Q8) ID the legendary creature
The origins of this legend begin in the summer of 1993 when workers working
on the rebuild of the North Bank at the Highbury Stadium, discovered an
enormous egg which was lifted and kept safely in the confines of a blanket
where it cracked rather soon.
This occupant of the egg grew quickly and was revealed to the public on
August 20, 1993, becoming an extremely popular gentle giant.
The “sacking of its soul” during the COVID lockdown led to public outcry,
including Mesut Ozil offering to pay for its sustained existence but the
authorities responded that “...isn’t extinct and would return when fans return
to the stadium”.

A8. Gunnersaurus Rex (Arsenal FC’s mascot)

Q9) ID the tradition (7,5) / Give Funda
This tradition dates back to 776 BC, with a certain something been
announced before and during the event to ensure the safety of all those
involved, so that they can travel safely to and return safely from it.
In 1992, it was renewed when all nations were called upon to observe
_____ during an event. As of 2022, it starts one week before the “main
initiation” of the first event and ends one week after the “closure” of
the second event.
Failures to observe the same may potentially lead to exclusion of the
involved parties. Some of the violations include in 2014, 2022 and 2024.

A9. Olympic Truce (all competing nations must refrain from
engaging in conflict/war in a period from one week prior to the
opening ceremony to one week after the closing ceremony of the
Games)

Q10) What is so special about this race ?
This race has been a custom as a
promotional event for the baseball
team Washington Nationals since July
21, 2006 - being held in the middle of
the fourth inning of each game -
featuring seven contestants (though
Bill, Calvin and Herbie retired to
Florida prior to the 2017 season).

A10. The Presidents Race (the contestants are likenesses of certain
US Presidents but with giant foam caricature heads)

Q11*) What did McNamara forget to bring & what
alternative was used
Forgetting something silly in the dressing room turned out to be disastrous
for match official David McNamara, when he officiated the game between
Manchester City and Reading in the Women’s Super League in 2018.
Under the pressure of it being a TV game, and running short on time, he
asked the two captains to do something impromptu to decide which team
takes which side - a clear violation of Law 8 in the FA’s rulebook, resulting in
his suspension post-match for 21 days for “not acting in the best interests of
the game”.

A11. He forgot to bring the coin for the toss , he instead asked the
captains to decide sides through a game of rock paper scissors

Q12) ID the tribute & where did the GP happen
Jorge Martin, a Motogp racer featured a rather unique helmet
during a recent GP. When asked why he sported such a vibrant
design, he said that X symbolises wisdom and is the patron of arts
and sciences; this is his tribute.
He had hoped that this helmet would bring him good luck during the
race in a country where Phra Pikanet has inspired both the art as
well as the architecture .

A12. The tribute was to Ganesha and the GP was held in Thailand

Q13) Give the name of the character / position

This sport has seen a variety of positions to help the participants gain an
advantage, such as 4 time Tour de France winner Chris Froome’s ‘seat tuck’,
but one such position that blew everyone away was by the Italian Michael
Guerra.

He unclips from his pedals, shifts his weight from his sit bones to his pelvis,
and then reaches his legs straight back, doing so substantially cutting down
the wind resistance faced while going downhill. This position went viral on
social networks and many pointed out this position's resemblance to a
certain comic book character after whom the position was then named.

A13. Superman Position

Q14) ID the Sport
This sport is often ridiculed for being pedestrian in comparison to other
sports being competed at a very high level. In 1992, noted sportscaster Bob
Costas compared it to “a contest to see who could whisper the loudest”.
In this sport governed by only two rules - including “loss of contact”, it
features a high number of disqualifications even at the highest level - in one
such instance, Jane Saville missed out on an Olympic gold on her home soil
within touching distance due to being disqualified - causing a lot of agony as
she collapsed into tears and when asked what she needed, replied “A gun to
shoot myself”.

A14. Race Walking

Q15) ID the superstar we are talking about ?
Emanuel Santos created a bust of a sporting superstar at an airport newly
renamed in his honour. The sculpture received a strong reaction due to its lack of
resemblance with the star, and received harsh comments including among others
- ugly, horrendous, and bizarre.
Rich McCormick notes "The finished product makes the famously handsome man
into something of a monster, squaring his head, shrinking his eyes, and inflating
his bones to horrific levels. It looks like someone having a bad reaction to hair
dye, or like The Goonies' Sloth after some partially successful plastic surgery, and
as is to be expected in these situations, the internet went wild."
It was also said to resemble the Irish former professional footballer Nigel Quinn.

A15. Cristiano Ronaldo

Q16*) Give the metaphor, the thespian and the literary
work (which is arguably the most filmed play ever).
This metaphor (4,5,5) is used to describe an impulsive person on an
erratic pursuit. It was first coined and can be traced back to an iconic
work belonging to one of the the thespians of English literature, drama
and poetry.
It was initially used to refer to an equestrian race where the lead rider
speeds unpredictably around a course, with other riders following in
pursuit forming a wavelike pattern, which bears resemblance to a
gaggle of creatures.

A16. Wild Goose Chase, William Shakespeare & Romeo and Juliet

Q17) ID this super-athlete , who also nets a massive
fanbase in his present sport
Now touted as one of the brightest talents in his sport - a
torchbearer for the future, this star sparkled in the sport of
skiing earlier during his youth - being one of Italy’s top
junior skiers - winning a national slalom championship in
2008 and coming up as the runner-up in 2012.
Eventually, he decided to give up a promising career in
skiing for his present sport - due to his tall and thin
physique, and the individuality and greater aspect of control
in this sport.

A17. Jannik Sinner

Q18) ID the club and the movie.

Los Colchoneros struck up a deal between 2003 and 2005 that resulted in
something being featured on their jerseys - with a record 16 different shirt
signed logos in the 2003-04 season.
The likes of Fernando Torres and co were seen wearing multiple glamorous
jerseys while celebs including Samuel L Jackson, Halle Berry, Harrison Ford
and Will Smith among others posed with the jerseys.
A certain version, became extremely popular- sticking along in the public’s
mind - with the lead actors of this blockbuster movie too netting jerseys of
their own names.

A16. Atletico Madrid and Spiderman 2 (Raimiverse)

Q19) ID X and the invention
A certain incident during the 1932 tour of America might have led to
crazy consequences and the dawn of something special. The
dismissal of prolific X getting dismissed without scoring in one of
the matches during the tour made the headlines everywhere, and
purportedly caught the attention of a particular pioneer.
Although not verified, this has inspired a massive lore around the
origins of a particular "invention" of a beloved character.

A19. Sir Donald Bradman and Donald Duck

Q20*) Give the original context of the Instagram story
& funda to this tweet
Gems of Cricket is an X page that produces memes and gags. They posted
this owing to a 2024 release. This hilarious post is apt in multiple ways,
especially if one thinks back to a certain incident in 2019.

A20. The original context was that
Martin Guptill posted this on his
Instagram story on 10th July 2024
due to the hate he was receiving on
the 5th anniversary of the Dhoni
runout . the context of this tweet was
in reaction to the Kannada film
Martin which was trolled and panned
relentlessly across india for its mid
“masterpiece” qualities.
