About This Presentation

The torque converter controls the amount of fluid that enters the automatic transmission for a smooth running of the engine. As it works all the time, the converter may wear out and show various signs such as transmission slipping, shuddering, overheating and stalling of the engine. See the followin...

Signs of Malfunctioning Torque Converter in Cars

One of the most vital instruments in a car which plays a crucial role in its performance is the torque converter.

The torque converter is a part of your car that controls the amount of fluid that is to be passed to the automatic transmission & also allows the engine to keep running in an ideal condition.

In short, the torque converter is a fluid coupling, which plays a role in the transfer of torque from the engine to the transmission.

Here are the signs that are exhibited by the cars whenever they encounter any issues related to the torque converter.

Transmission slipping

Whenever the fluid cannot be controlled properly an issue with the torque converter usually manifests itself very rapidly.

If the amount of fluid passed into the transmission is too much or inadequate, then it leads to slipping off the gears and a loss in acceleration

Moreover, you will also notice a sudden decrease in the fuel economy of the car and this phenomenon also occurs due to low or bad fluid buildup.

Shuddering

The Shuddering of the car is perhaps the most common phenomenon which occurs when the torque converter malfunctions.

Moreover, shuddering is mostly felt when you are driving at 30 to 45 MPH and it will feel like running over rough road or bumps or gravels and it comes without warning.

Furthermore, this happens due to a mechanical failure, which is caused by a misalignment of the torque converter.

Overheating

While driving if your temperature gauge indicates that your car is overheating, then this means that the torque converter is not working correctly.

This is one of the most common problems associated with a malfunctioning torque converter and it happens due to a drop in the fluid pressure.

Consequently, if the torque converter gets overheated, then it won't be able to transfer power from the engine to the transmission.

High stall speed

Due to the malfunctioning torque converter, the transmission takes more time to engage the engine, leading to engine stalling.

This sporadic engagement of the engine is particularly severe in transmissions having lock-up converters as the transfer of the engine's rotational force into hydraulic pressure become affected.

Whenever, you come across these issues then you need to take your car to an automotive repair shop to fix the torque converter immediately.
