Architectural Criticism

Course Description This course explores the principles and practices of architectural criticism. Students will examine historical and contemporary perspectives on architectural discourse, develop critical thinking skills, and engage in writing and discussion about built environments.

Learning Objectives By the end of this course, students will be able to: Understand the history and evolution of architectural criticism. Analyze and critique architectural works through various theoretical lenses. Develop articulate written and verbal critiques of architectural designs. Course Outline Week 1: Introduction to Architectural Criticism Overview of the course and syllabus Definition and importance of architectural criticism Week 2: Historical Perspectives Early architectural criticism: Vitruvius to the Renaissance Key figures in architectural criticism Week 3: Modernism and Its Discontents Critique of modernist architecture Notable critics (e.g., Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn) Week 4: Postmodernism and Contextualism Reaction to modernism Examining the works of Robert Venturi and others
