About This Presentation

Simplifying integer expressions

Slide Content

What have we learned about multiplication and division of integers? What are the closure, commutative, and associative properties of integers? QUESTION:

It is use to determine the order to simplify an expression with multiple operations. PMDAS RULE:

While multiplying, if there is a (–) sign before the parentheses, change the sign of the terms inside. If there is a (+) sign before the parentheses, do not change the sign of the terms inside. RULES IN SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS IMVOLVING INTEGERS

If there is an integer just outside the parentheses, remove the parentheses and multiply the integer with all the numbers within parentheses. RULES IN SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS IMVOLVING INTEGERS

Solve.   PROBLEM:

A worker dug a pit at the rate of 3 feet per hour. Then, he continued digging at the speed of 2 feet per hour. He stopped work after reaching 22 feet below ground level. How much time did the workers speed on digging the pit? PROBLEM:

1 st Session: Speed = – 3 feet/hour; Depth = – 12 feet; Time Spent = – 12 ( – 3) 2 nd Session: Speed = – 2 feet/hour; Depth = [– 22 – (– 12)] feet; Time Spent = [– 22 – (– 12)] (– 2)   ANSWER:

Total Time Spent on Digging the Pit = Time Spent on the 1 st Session + Time Spent on the 2 nd Session = – 12 (– 3 ) + [– 22 – (– 12)] (– 2 ) = – 12 (– 3) + (– 10) (– 2) = 4 + 5 = 9   ANSWER:

A shopkeeper wants to pack 250 kg of sugar into packs of sugar for P70 add adds P2 as a packaging charge for each pack. How much will he earn in all if he sells the entire stock of sugar? PROBLEM:

Number of Packs = 250 2 = 125 Cost of One Pack = Cost of One Sugar + Packaging Charges Cost of 12 Packs = 125 (P70 + P2 ) = P125 72 = P 9, 000   ANSWER:

Two friends climb a hill. After reaching a certain point one of them descends at the rate of 12 m per minute and the other continues climbing at the speed of 10 m per minute. Write the expression for the distance between them after 30 minutes. What is the distance between them after 30 minutes? PROBLEM:
