Single Cell Protein (SCP) By: Dr . Pooja Singh M.Sc ., Ph.D. (Botany)
The dried cells of microorganism used as food or feed for animals and they are collectively known as Microbial Proteins. This term was replaced by a new term called as Single Cell Protein. This term single cell protein was coined in 1966 by Corrol L. Wilson.
Production of SCP requires microorganisms that serve as the protein source and the substrate that is biomass on which it grow. The biomass used can be plant biomass or organic biomass. The microorganisms used belong to the group of Algae F ungi and Bacteria .
COMPARISION OF MICRO-ORGANISMS ADVANTAGES DIS ADVANTAGES FUNGI Easy to grow & harvest Lower growth rates & lower protein content ALGAE Easy to grow & harvest & high quality protein Non –digestible cellulosic cell wall, concentrate heavy metals YEAST Larger in size, lower NA content familiarity & acceptability Poor digestibility, low protein , content, slow growth rate BACTERIA High protein content, digestible cell wall High NA content, small in size, low density
Microorganism used for SCP production FUNGI Aspergillus fumigatus Aspergillus niger Rhizopus cyclopium Fusarium
ALGAE Spirulina species Chlorella pyrenoidosa Chondrus crispus Chlorella species
4.BACTERIA a) Pseudomonas fluorescence b ) Lactobacillus c) Baccilus megaterium d) Methylotrophus
Steps Involved in Production of SCP Suitable strains need to be selected. Fermentation of the microorganism. Harvesting in proper condition. Post harvesting treatments. Single cell protein processing.
SCP Production properties SCP production should have the following properties a ) Absence of pathogenicity and toxicity. b) Protein quality and content. c) growth rate. d) adaptability to unusual environment condition.
Application of SCP Obesity , weight, stress ,cholesterol and blood sugar level can be all controlled with this therapeutic and pharmaceutical use. Application for hair and skin products. Malnourished people can benefit from protein supplements. A convient feeding source for poultry , fisheries and animal farms.
Advantage of SCP a ) High protein content of 43-85% in dry mass. b) Rapid successions of generation. c) low land requirement economically beneficial. d) Utilization of solar energy. e) Cellular, molecular and genetic alteration.
Disadvantage of SCP High content of nucleic acid leading to elevated level of uric acid. Development of kidney stone and gout if consumed in high quantity. Possibility for the presence of secondary metabolites. Poor digestibility. Hypersensitivity skin reactions.
