Concept Overview:
Bhasma – calcined metallic/herbo-metallic preparations used in Rasashastra.
Anupana – the suitable vehicle or medium given along with medicine.
It modifies absorption, potency, and therapeutic direction of the drug.
The same Bhasma acts differently when given with different Anupana according to Dosha, Roga, and Rogi Bala.
Proper selection of Anupana enhances the therapeutic potential of Rajata and Loha Bhasma.
The same drug acts in different ways depending on its Anupana.
Understanding this principle is crucial for effective and safe Ayurvedic management of various diseases

Single Drug – BHASMA Different ANUPANA indicated in Different DISEASES Dr MAMTA KOLTE 2 nd yr PG Scholar Dept of RS&BK
INTRODUCTION Bhasma refers to the calcined metallic/mineral preparations used in Rasashastra for therapeutic purposes. Subjecting metals/minerals to purification & incineration processes to convert them into a fine, bioavailable form. Anupana - the vehicle/adjuvant given with or after medicine to enhance absorption, potency, & targeted action. Bhasma may exhibit different pharmacological actions when administered with different Anupanas . Selection of Anupana depends on disease condition, Dosha predominance, & desired therapeutic effect. 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 2
Definition of MARANA शोधितान् लोहधात्वादीं विमर्ध स्वरसादिभीः । अग्निसंयोगतो भस्मीकरणं मारणं स्मृतम् ।। The process of subjecting the metallic and mineral drugs for different pharmaceutical procedures using a wide range of herbal formulation ( swarasa , kwatha , etc ) and later subjecting them to intense heat to obtain them in the form of Bhasma is called Marana ( incineration ). 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 3
CHARACTERIZATION OF BHASMA Color ( Varna ): A specific color is mentioned for each Bhasma . The color of the preparation primarily depends on the parent material Lusterless ( Nishchandratvam ): Bhasma must be lusterless before therapeutic application. For this test, Bhasma is observed under bright sunlight to determine whether luster is present are not, if luster is still present, it indicates further incineration. Lightness and Fineness ( Varitara ): floats on stagnant water surface. This test is based on the law of surface tension. Properly incinerated Bhasma needs to float on the water surface Tactile sensation: Tactile sensation can be absorbed and assimilated in the body without producing any irritation to mucous membrane of gastrointestinal tract Particle size: Prepared Bhasma should be in powder form. Particle of Bhasma should be like pollen grains of ketaki flower. 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 4
CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTIC Apunarbhavata : It means the incapability to regain the original metallic form. For this test, Bhasma is mixed with an equal quantity of seeds of Gunja , honey, ghee, and borax, then sealed in earthen pots and heated with a similar grade of heat. Thereafter particular Bhasma is observed on self-cooling. Niruttha : To test the inability to regain the metallic form of metallic Bhasma . In this test, Bhasma is mixed with a fixed weight of silver leaf and kept in sealed earthen pots. Then, a similar grade of heat is applied, and after self-cooling, the weight of the silver is taken. An increase in the weight of the silver leaf indicates improperly prepared Bhasma. 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 5
QUALITY CONTROL OF BHASMA Lusterless: There should be no chandrika or metallic luster ( nischandrika ) Rekhapurnatvam : When a Bhasma is spread between the index finger and thumb and rubbed, it should be so fine as to get easily into the lines and crevices of the fingers and should not be washed out from the lines of the fingers Varitaratavam : When a small quantity is spread on cold and still water, it should float on the surface Apurnabhava : The Bhasma should not revert to the original state Taste: Bhasma should be tasteless Avami : The Bhasma should not produce nausea on administration. 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 6
IMPORTANCE OF BHASMA Maintain optimum alkalinity for optimum health Provide easily absorbed and usable calcium Cleanse the kidneys, intestines, and liver Maintain stronger bones and healthier teeth Alleviate insomnia, depression Keeps the rhythmic heart beating Keeps arrhythmias and mineral balance Help metabolize iron in the body Aid the nervous system Breakdown heavy metals and drug residues in the body Neutralize harmful acids that lead to illness Protect the body from free radical damage 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 7
Concept of Bhasma with Different Anupana It can enhance or direct specific therapeutic actions. Different Anupanas help pacify specific Doshas. To improve Absorption & Bioavailability. To reduce toxicity To suit diseases & patient condition 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 8

Dosha Wise Role Vata To nourish the Dhatus and reduce weakness. Ruksha & Sheeta Gunas of Lauha are balanced by Snigdha Anupāna ( Ghrita , Milk etc.). It strengthens Rakta & Majja Dhatu, stabilizing Vata. Pitta To cool and purify blood, reduce burning & bleeding. Tikta -Kashaya Rasa and Sheeta Veerya pacify Pitta, improve Rakta quality, and alleviate Raktapitta , burning sensation, and inflammation. Kapha To reduce Meda, Kapha, and Kleda ; stimulate digestion. Ruksha, Tikta , and Kashāya Rasa scrape excess Kapha and Meda, improve metabolism (Agni). 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 35

COCLUSION The therapeutic effect of Bhasma varies according to the type of Anupana used. Anupana acts as a catalyst, enhancing the absorption, assimilation, & targeted action of Bhasma. The same Bhasma can be utilized in different diseases by changing the Anupana , making it versatile & pt.-specific. Selection of Anupana depends on Dosha, Rogi Bala, Rogavastha , & desired pharmacological effect. A proper combination of Bhasma & suitable Anupana ensures maximum efficiency, safety, & desired therapeutic effect. 13-10-2025 By- Dr Mamta Kolte 45
