•Asitzbathisalsoknownashipbath.
•Asitzbathisamethodofapplyingwarmbathtothe
pelvicorrectalareabysittinginatub.
•Cleansestheperineum,thespacesbetweentherectum
andthevulvainfemaleandscrotuminmale.
•Itcanalsoproviderelieffrompainoritchinginthegenital
area.

SITZ BATH

DEFINITION
•Sitzbathisawarm,shallowbathinwhichthereisa
localapplicationofmoistheattothepelvicorgan.
•Temperatureofthewatershouldbe105°-110°For
wecanuselukewarmwaterascomfortableto
patientifbaththermometerisnotavailable.
•Durationofthebathis15-30minutesorastolerated
bypatient.

Purpose of SitzBath
1.To aid healing process of perinealwounds by
cleaning it and to wipe off discharges and debris.
2.To reduce the pain and discomfort.
3.To relieve pain, congestion and inflammation in
cases of:
a. Hemorrhoid: are swollen veins in your lower
rectum.
b. Tenesmus: A sensation of incomplete
evacuation.
c. After proctoscopic or cycloscopic examination.

PROCTOSCOPE

4. To reduce the pain and discomfort during
menstrual period.
5.To reduce swelling and irritation.
6.To increase circulation by vasodilatation.
7.To promote relaxation.
8.To relieve pain in retention and painful
urination.

INDICATIONS
•Swollenpainfulhemorrhoids
•Following surgeryin the ano-rectal region.
•Episiotomy
•Uterine Cramps

CONTRAINDICATIONS
•Diabetes, peripheral vascular diseases.
•Impaired peripheral sensory function.
•Immediate post hemorrhoidectomy.
•Menstruating or pregnant women.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
•Maintaintheprivacyofthepatient.
•Ensureappropriatelevelofwaterandits
temperaturebeforeallowingpatienttosit.
•Sizeofthetubshouldbeappropriate.
•Washhandsbeforeandafterprocedure.
•Afterfinishingsitzbath,drytheperinealarea.

EQUIPMENT
•Sitztub or sitzbath basin.
•Low stool / potty chair/ toilet bowl.
•Warm water in jugs. (temperature 105-110°F/
40-43°C) or lukewarm water as comfortable for
patient.
•Medication if ordered.
•Clean gloves , if needed
•Towel
•Cotton pad for drying.
•Kidney tray for waste.

STEPS OF PROCEDURE
Pre procedural steps:
•Checkthephysicianorderandnursingcareplan
•Identifythepatient.
•Assessthepatientscondition,painlevel,and
abilitytoambulatetothebathroom.
•Washhands.

INTRA PROCEDURAL STEPS:
•Add required quantity of
ordered medication (eg.
Betadine) into sitzbath basin,
potassium permanganate etc.
•Fillthebasinwithwarmwater
attemperatureof(105-110°F/
40-43°C)orlukewarmwateras
comfortableforpatient.
•Keepbasinonalowstool/toilet
bowl/pottychairwithtoilet
seatup

•Assistpatientwithremovalofanydressingand
positionandassisttositinsitzbathbasin.
•Placethetowelonpatientsthighandcoverthe
shoulderswithsheettoprotectfromchillsand
exposure.
•Donotleavethepatientunattendedduringthe
procedure.
•Instructthepatienttocontractandralaxthe
sphincterwhiletakingsitzbath.

•Allowthepatienttositfor20minute,thenassist
withdryingandapplyingdressingorperipadas
required.
•Discontinuetheprocedureifanyadverseaffects
likedizziness,weakness,acceleratedpulserate
orpalloroccurs.
•Helpthepatientoutofthetubwhenthebathis
completed.

•Assist patient back to bed, and instruct to stay in
bed for 20 minutes hip elevated.
•Clean and replace all the reusable articles.
•If the basin is to be autoclaved, arrange for it.
•Wash hands.
POST-PROCEDURAL STEPS:
Documenttoleranceofprocedure,painand
appearancesofperinealarea/woundarea.

WASTE MANAGEMENT
•Soiledwatershouldbedrainedintoilet
•Peripadandtissueusedforwipingoffperineal
shouldbediscardedinyellowbagasitwillbe
contaminated.
