Enhancing Teaching and Learning through ICT Integration
ICT Integration strengthens the quality of teaching and learning. Its effectiveness depends largely on the awareness of teachers on the appropriate materials to use and in overcoming the difficulties encountered during delivery of the lesson. Do not let the number of lessons you have delivered nor the number of recognitions you have received define you because that is what is expected of you as a teacher. What your students become will define you. If your students outperform you in the future, you can say, I did my mission as a teacher! Rex Angel G. Asuncion | Multigrade Teacher “ “
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Show appreciation for the roles and benefits of using ICT in the classroom. 2. Describe strategies to enhance lesson plans using ICT. 3. Ensure effective ICT integration in the teaching and learning process.
Activity 1: Quiz Game Show!
Analysis Class A Class B
What are the things you considered in enhancing the task/activity in the lesson plans with ICT? Analysis
What is ICT? According to UNESCO “ICT is a scientific, technological and engineering discipline and management technique used in handling information, its application and association with social, economic and cultural matters”. Abstraction
What is ICT in Education? Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education is the mode of education that uses information and communications technology to support, enhance, and optimize the delivery of information (UNESCO).
What is Teaching and Learning with ICT? Teaching and learning with ICT can be broadly defined as a process of using any ICT resources including information on the web, multimedia programs in CD-ROMs, learning objects, or other tools to enhance student learning. (Williams, 2003)
The DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) aims to provide public schools with appropriate technologies that would enhance the teaching-learning process and meet the challenges of the 21st century . (DO 78, s .2010) It aims to leverage the use of technology in delivering education more effectively and innovatively. ICT will play the most important role to achieve the SDGs especially SDG 4, “ Ensure inclusive and Equitable Quality Education and Promote Lifelong Learning Opportunities for All ” ( Tjoa and Tjoa 2016). DepED Digitalization
Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers or PPST supports PEDAGOGY Strand 1.3 on positive use of ICT Indicators Proficient Teachers 1.3.2 Ensure the positive use of ICT to facilitate the teaching and learning process. Highly Proficient Teacher 1.3.3 Promote effective strategies in the positive use of ICT to facilitate the teaching and learning process. Why ICT in the Teaching & Learning Process ?
Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers or PPST supports . CURRICULUM AND PLANNING Strand 4.5 teaching and learning resources including ICT Indicators: Proficient Teachers 4.5.2 Select, develop, organize and use appropriate teaching and learning resources, including ICT, to address learning goals. Highly Proficient Teacher 4.5.3 Advise and guide colleagues in the selection, organization, development and use of appropriate teaching and learning resources, including ICT, to address specific learning goals. Why ICT in the Teaching & Learning Process ?
ICT Integration (Important Considerations) Purpose of applying ICT tools/materials The difficult part of the lesson that can be supported by ICT tools available ICT resources part of the lesson in each grade level where ICT could be integrated effectively ways of optimizing learning experience characteristics of a meaningful ICT tool How to integrate ICT in the teaching & learning process?
The SAMR Model • A model that allows teachers to evaluate how technology enhances or transforms the learning experience.
SAMR and Bloom’s Taxonomy
SUBSTITUTION Use a word processing program to type out a story instead of handwriting AUGMENTATION Use a tool such as “spell check” to make sure all words are spelled correctly. (other tools- Thesaurus, Word Count, Clip Art, etc. MODIFICATION Bring a story to life using an online multimedia application, (Flipboard, Sock Puppets, etc.) REDEFINITION Use video conferencing to tell a story. (Google Hangout, Face Time, etc.)
SCIENCE
Application (20 minutes) Directions: Use your output in Activity #2. 2. Select one of the activities (learning/assessment) to be enhanced using ICT. 3. Utilizing ICT tools and apps, create or construct a product (instructional content) that can replace, supplement, change, or redefine that section of the lesson. 4. Consider that these ICT materials are available for use in your school or in your class.
Reflection How can I use the knowledge and experiences I gained to transform my classroom into a digital one?
“ Any technology which increases the rate of learning would enable the teacher to teach less and the learner to learn more”
Closure “Educational technology is not, and never will be transformative on its own…computers cannot replace teachers – teachers are the key to whether technology is used appropriately and effectively.” – Carlson and Gadio , 2002
George Courus said, “ Technology will not replace great teachers but technology in the hands of great teachers can be transformational. ”
Thank you!
