Confusianism and Taoism

Slide Content

CONFUCIUS

Confucianism
promotes the idea of
the self as a social
being shaped by
relationships and
duties. Conversely,.

At the heart of Confucianism lies the concept of Ren
(humaneness) and Li (ritual propriety). These principles
emphasize the importance of moral integrity, social
harmony, and the cultivation of virtuous relationships within
society.

In Confucianism,
rituals serve to
reinforce social order
and moral values,
promoting a sense of
community.

TAOISM

The yin yang is a
symbolic representation
of the world's polarities,
dualisms, and
fundamental
dichotomies: light and
dark, male and female,
life and death.

Key figures such as Confucius
and Laozi have shaped these
philosophies. Their teachings
continue to influence various
fields including politics,
education, and spirituality,
underscoring their lasting
legacy in both Eastern and
Western thought.

Taoism is centered around the
concept of the Tao (the Way),
which represents the
fundamental nature of the
universe. Key ideals include
Wu Wei (non-action) and
naturalism, encouraging
individuals to align with the
natural flow of life.

Taoism has been connected to the
philosopher Lao Tzu, who, around 500
B.C.E., wrote the main book of Taoism,
the Tao Te Ching.
Taoists believe in spiritual immortality,
where the spirit of the body joins the
universe after death.

Authored by Lao Tzu, it is Taoism’s foundational
text.
It is 81 short chapters, dating back to the 3rd.
century, b.c.e.
It contains many paradoxes and profound
teachings on
living in harmony with nature.
Chapter 56 = Echoes of such mystery are heard
repeatedly.
Those who know do not speak; Those who speak
do not
know.

Taoism is one of the world's great
religions. It can also be called Daoism,
which reflects its name in Chinese,
Daojiao. It was founded in Zhou dynasty
China sometime between 500 to 400 BCE
by Laozi (Lao Tzu), a semi-legendary
Chinese scholar who was a contemporary
of Confucius.

LAO TZU AND CHUANG TZU

Born in 604 B.C. E., his name means “old master.”
He was conceived by a shooting star.
When his mother gave birth to him, he was already
eighty two years old, a wise man with flowing white
hair..
He worked as a government archivist.
Eventually, he became disinchant ed with the
corruption of government.
He left his town after taking three days to write down
his words of wisdom, The Tao Te Ching.
LAO TZU

Taoism’s second founder seems to have lived from
369 to 286 b.c.e.
The Chuang Tzu, his text, is as important as the Tao
Te Ching but not as well known.
He is known for his humor, profound lessons and
stories.
The Central theme of his work is the relativity of
things: “Who is to say, it asks, exactly what is good,
what ought to be done, or even who we are, when
answers to such questions are so dependent on
particular
circumstances?
