Digital Safety and Smart Online Behavior
BY: MASHIANE RR
Introduction
•Digital safety is about
protecting yourself online.
•The internet offers
learning, fun, and social
media.
•But it also has risks like
scams, cyberbullying, and
harmful content.
•South African learners
face WhatsApp scams and
fake TikTok accounts.
What is Digital Safety?
Digital safety means keeping
personal information, devices,
and reputation safe.
It includes safe passwords,
careful posting, and avoiding
cyberbullying.
It helps learners become
responsible digital citizens.
Why Online Safety
Matters
Online risks include identity
theft, scams, and harmful
content (Wikipedia
contributors, 2025).
Cyberbullying can harm
mental health and school
performance (Brmbota,
n.d.).
Your online reputation is
permanent and can affect
your future (MsCCostello,
n.d.).
South African
Context
•Learners in SA face unique
digital risks.
•Examples: WhatsApp job
scams, fake data bundle
offers, and harmful TikTok
challenges.
•Awareness helps learners
avoid these dangers and
make smart choices.
Strong Passwords
(Part 1)
•Passwords are the first line of
defenceagainst hackers.
•A strong password be 8–12
characters (MsCCostello, n.d.).
•Use a mix of uppercase,
lowercase, numbers, and
symbols.
Part 2
Avoid personal details
like birthdays or names
(Billones, n.d.).
Example of weak
password: password123.
Example of strong
password:
L3arn$afe2025!
In SA, many school Wi-Fi
accounts get hacked due
to weak passwords
(hannahstrevig, n.d.).
Think Before You
Post (Part 1)
•Every post leaves a permanent digital
footprint (MsCCostello, n.d.).
•Even deleted content can be screenshotted
or saved by others.
Think Before You
Post (Part 2)
•Before posting, ask:
Would I be okay if my
teacher, parent, or future
boss saw this? (Brmbota,
n.d.).
•South African Example:
Sharing school fights on
TikTok damages
reputations.
Avoiding Cyberbullying(Part 1)
Cyberbullying =
harassment, gossip,
threats, or sharing private
photos (Wikipedia
contributors, 2025).
It happens on WhatsApp,
Facebook, Instagram, or
TikTok.
Avoiding Cyberbullying
(Part 2)
Effects: stress, depression, poor marks.
Prevention strategies:
Be kind online.
Don’t join gossip.
Report bullying to teachers or parents
(MsCCostello, n.d.).
Block bullies and take screenshots for
evidence (Billones, n.d.).
Spotting
Fake
Information
(Part 1)
Fake news
spreads quickly
online.
Check if a website
is trustworthy
(Billones, n.d.).
Look for the
author’s name
and publishing
date.
Spotting Fake
Information
(Part 2)
Cross-check the story on
different websites
(hannahstrevig, n.d.).
South African Example:
Fake COVID-19 cures on
WhatsApp in 2020
misled many learners.
Smart Social Media Use
Social media connects people but has risks
(hannahstrevig, n.d.).
Don’t overshare personal details like your school or phone
number.
Set privacy settings to control who sees your posts
(MsCCostello, n.d.).
Balance: limit screen time and spend offline time with
family and friends (Brmbota, n.d.).
Why This Helps Learning
& Life
Practising digital safety builds
confidence (Wikipedia
contributors, 2025).
It teaches learners respect
and responsibility online
(MsCCostello, n.d.).
Safe behaviour prepares for
future careers in a tech-
driven world (Billones, n.d.).
Protecting yourself online
also protects your
community.
Conclusion
KEY LESSONS: USE STRONG
PASSWORDS.
THINK BEFORE
YOU POST.
AVOID
CYBERBULLYING.
SPOT FAKE
NEWS.
BE SMART ON
SOCIAL MEDIA.
