MEANING Social attitude is the broad terminology which encompasses the beliefs, feelings and action predispositions of an individual or group of individuals toward objects, philosophies and individuals in a social context.
Implications for Educational A dministrators Social attitudes are learned. Social attitudes are the feelings and beliefs of an individual or groups of people. These feelings and beliefs define one's predispositions toward given aspects of the world.
Social attitude endures in an individual unless something happens in a drastic manner. For example, if a student 'X' is constantly posted on night duties (during clinical posting) his attitude might vary. Attitude can fall anywhere along a continuum from very favorable to very unfavorable. Attitudes are organized and constitute the core of an individual. All people, regardless of their position or intelligence, embrace attitudes.
Concept of Social Attitude A social attitude is mental state of readiness. It is learned and organized through experiences and exerts a specific influence on person's response to people, object and situations with which it is socially related.
Social attitudes are learned predispositions toward aspects of our social environment. These may either be positively or negatively directed toward certain people, service or institutions. Quite often persons and objects or ideas become associated in the minds of individuals and As a result, social attitudes become multidimensional and complex.
Components of Social Attitude In general, social attitude comprises three elements. They are: A Affective element A cognitive element A behavioral element
1.An affective element: The feelings, sentiments, moods and emotions about some ideas, individual, incident or object.
II. A cognitive element: The philosophies, opinion, knowledge or information held by the individual.
III.A behavioral element: The predispositions to get on a favorable or unfavorable assessment of something. These three elements do not exist or function in an independent manner. An attitude represents the interplay of a person's affective, cognitive and behavioral affinities with regard to an individual, group, an event or an issue.
Functions of Social Attitude In general, people tend to hold social attitudes because they serve important functions. social attitude performs four important functions:
ADJUSTMENT FUNCTIONS Social attitudes often help people to adjust themselves with their work atmosphere. When faculty and students are well treated, they likely cultivate a positive attitude toward the educational administrators and the institution.
Development of positive attitude leads to hard work and better learning in students. When faculty and students are berated and rewarded poorly, they are likely to develop a negative attitude toward the institution as such.
Ego-defense function People often form and maintain certain attitudes to protect their own self-images.
For example, Faculty may feel threatened by the employment of a new faculty or progress of other faculty in their organization. Such an ego-defensive attitude if molded in proper sense can be used to cope effectively. If this feeling persists, this negative attitude tend to persist unchanged and compromise the faculty vitality.
Value expressive function This social attitudinal function contains three main aspects are as follows :- It helps to express the individual's central values and self-identity.
2. The expressive function also helps individuals to define their self-concept. 3 . The expressive function helps individuals to adopt and internalize the values and standards of a group they have joined and as a consequence, they are better able to communicate to the group
Knowledge function The group members need to maintain a stable, organized and meaningful working environment to prevent chaos. Attitudes not only provide the standards or frames of reference for judging objectives or events but also help in developing consistency in thinking that is particularly relevant. The knowledge function of social attitude is better observed in an behavior of an individual.
