Introduction Casework is the most developed method of solving individual’s problems and improving his social relations.

Meaning and Concept of social casework:- Social casework is an academic and professional discipline that seeks to help the welfare of communities, individuals, families, and groups.

Relationship is the medium through which changes are brought in the behavior and personality of the client. Psychosocial assessment is a key tool used in casework.

Definition:- “Social casework is a work performed by a Social Worker with a case or an individual to solve his/her problems and help in that extent that he/she can adjust and develop within the society”.

According to Miss Richmond , “Social casework is an art of doing different things for and with different people by cooperating with them to achieve at one and at the same time their own and their society’s betterment.”

Philosophical Assumptions & Values:- Every human being has to be considered as a person with dignity and worth. Every individual is like all other human beings in some aspects and like no other individuals in certain aspects. Every individual is potential for growth and Achievements.

The individual and society in which one lives are interdependent. Every individual has the right to self-determination. Basic human needs have to be met by services, which are not dependent upon in accord either to moral behavior or to race, nationality, caste, etc.

Objectives To understand and solve the internal problems of the individual. To strengthen ones self-esteem . Remediation of problems in social functioning. Prevention of problems in social functioning. Development of resources to enhance social functioning.

Importance of Casework in India Initially social casework was practiced relatively only in few agencies and institutions. It may be in some of the Holy places like Temples, Churches, Mosques and so on.

Today social casework is practiced in many agencies and Institutions. They are like:- Hospitals, Clinics, Courts, Industries, Military organizations, Family welfare agency, Child welfare agency, Institutions for the Aged, Destitute, Orphans etc.

Current Trends Caseworkers are now more aware of their own contribution to human welfare. As a profession it has now gained more popularity. One of the current trends is increased stress on the importance of research.

Conclusion:- In this unit, we have discussed about Meaning and Concept of Social case work, Definition, Assumptions, Values, Objectives and Importance of Case work. Through this study it is clear that Casework as a tool of dealing with individual has become an important method of social work.
