The strategies to incorporate social emotional learning in classrooms revolve around teaching these skills, practicing them and then applying them. There are various ways of doing so as follows : shorturl.at/dmvz9 shorturl.at/dqr39 Strategies

1 . Promote Journal Writing Reflective writing involves critically analysing an experience, recording how it has impacted you and what you plan to do with your new knowledge. Reflective journal writing is a great way to promote social emotional learning . Students can either be given a prompt or asked to write freely. Writing a reflective journal helps them become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, emotions and the resulting behaviour. It , thus, also helps them become more empathetic and compassionate. Creating a soothing and comfortable environment during the writing exercise promotes the feeling of relaxation and aids with the Sharing of responses with a partner or the entire class is another useful way of promoting social emotional learning through reflective journal writing.

2. Encourage Read-Alouds for Perspective Taking Read- alouds can be a great way to encourage social emotional learning. They allow the opportunity for perspective taking through a discussion on whatever is being read. This helps the kids become more aware, empathetic and compassionate towards others’ thoughts, feelings and emotions while being able to better manage their own thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviour around others. This also helps develop their conflict resolution and management abilities.

3. Use Art to Encourage Expression Art is a great medium of expression and social emotional learning can also be practiced through it. Art is a great coping strategy for managing stress. Moreover, working with partners helps promote teamwork, collaboration, co-operation, sharing and relationship skills. This again is a great way to practice both self-awareness and social awareness. Example: Drawing , painting, sketching etc. Benefits: Using artistic methods takes your mind off of the negative emotions. It encourages healing and mental well being.

4. Discussing Empathy This is a critical social emotional learning skill as it makes one more socially aware and receptive to others. It is the foundation based on which one is able to understand others better by considering their feelings, points of view and the resultant behaviour. Thus, one is better able to manage self and others in social situations.

5 . HOLD CLASS MEETING Daily or weekly class meetings help to encourage social emotional learning. Where students discuss problems about course. Its forum where kids speak freely about any topic and help them practice self expression, problem solving etc. I t help to create a positive climate for all students.

6. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS Using mindfulness in the classroom can help teach kids how to calm down before a big test , manage their emotions when they are upset. Its help to manage stress and anxiety it is a self awareness skill that focus on present to accept ones circumstances. Sometimes kids don’t know how to calm down on their own . Mindfulness can help kids learn breathing strategies , how to focus on just one thing at a time, and relaxing bodies. EXAMPLE : BREATHING STRATEGEY ( BREATHE IN BREATHE OUT ) Guided meditation

7. PRACTICE RESPECTFULLY DISAGREEING People are going to disagree sometime however it’s important to disagree respectfully. Often emotions run high when someone disagrees with us it’s important to make students practice disagreeing in good manner. EXAMPLE : STUDENTS discuss debate topics making sure that they actively listen other one and respect opinion even when they don’t agree.

8 . PLAY GAMES Cooperative learning games help to promote social learning. It help kids become more self aware, develop positive relationship and make positive decisions .

Case Study Surveying Early childhood educators of Goddard School . After surveying the early childhood educators of the Goddard school it was found that 57.1% of the teachers said they have students with problem in self regulation. This is an astounding number. Proves to me that there is a need for solution. Using research based tactics can work. It help us plan for social emotional learning.

CONT…. After conducting research and collection of data at Goddard School. I have been able to come up with the solution recommendations for other educator to implement. Social-emotional Learning and help their learners to gain the ability to regulate. Within this case study is SEL Tool Box with the tools. They need to help their learners in their SEL and self-regulation.

Why is SEL important or beneficial for students? SEL can help students better understand and identify their emotions; it can help them develop empathy, increase self-control and manage stress. It also helps them build better relationships and interpersonal skills that will serve them in school and beyond, helping them succeed as adults. SEL is all about helping students learn to cope and deal with their stress and worries. It creates safe learning environments for kids because they get to talk about their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. They also get to learn coping skills to manage their mental wellness.

Why is SEL important for teachers? SEL helps teachers manage stress and burnout . Practicing self-awareness (one of the 5 competencies of SEL), they are more in tune with their emotions and aware of the things that cause them stress. Knowing the triggers enables them to use coping strategies to reduce the risk of becoming overwhelmed. https://www.digistore24.com/redir/449717/Ayeshajamil/
