The Impact of TikTok and Instagram on Teenagers' Mental Well-Being: A Balanced Perspective By:
Introduction Social media is the form where people can post pictures and communicate as well as do all sorts of things. Despite their benefits, TikTok and Instagram may worsen teenagers' mental well-being due to self-esteem issues, increased anxiety, and social comparison.
Arguments For (Negative Impact) Self-Esteem Issues: Example 1: A study by (Smith, 2021) found that Instagram's emphasis on fake and idealized images can lead to lower self-esteem among teenagers, as they may feel pressured to meet unrealistic beauty standards. Example 2: The constant exposure to filtered and edited images makes 87% of teens feel inadequate about their own appearance and lifestyle . Anxiety issues: Example 1: (Brown and Lee, 2022) said that the pressure to create and share content on TikTok can lead to anxiety. Teens may feel stressed about keeping a certain image or gaining approval through likes and comments. Example 2: 67% of teens need for frequent engagement and the fear of negative feedback lead to anxiety levels.
Arguments Against (Positive Impact) Opportunities for Creative Expression: Example 1: (Williams, 2023) found that TikTok allows teenagers to show their creativity through content formats, like dance challenges, comedy skits, and art, which has a sense of achievement and self-expression. Example 2: Engaging in creative activities can boost 95% of teenagers self-esteem and provide a constructive outlet for emotions. Social Connectivity: Example 1: (Patel and Jones, 2023) observed that Instagram helps tee ns maintain and strengthen relationships with friends and family, offering emotional support and a sense of belonging. Ex ample 2: Staying connected with loved ones can provide emotional stability and reduce feelings of isolation to 97% of teenagers.
Conclusion TikTok and Instagram offer many benefits, like creative outlets and social connectivity, but they also pose risks, including negative impacts on self-esteem, increased anxiety, and harmful social comparisons. I believe encouraging responsible use and giving guidance on monitoring social media can help teenagers to enhance its positive potential.
