Socius – (Latin) “social or being with others” Logos – (Greek) “to study” Etymology of Sociology Science of society and the social interactions taking place within it.

SOCIOLOGY- can be defined as the study of man and his environment in their relation with each other. In 1837 French philosopher Auguste Comte first coined the word sociology. By sociology he meant the application of scientific method in the study of the relationship between the society and individual .

Educational Sociology Education through sociological point of view. It studies the relationship between education and society and deals with the problem of relationship between education and society.

Educational Sociology and Curriculum Curriculum is organized so that it may help in achievement of social aims. The social progress of the society and the nation depends upon the curriculum in the schools and college’s due to this reason the sociologist consider it is essential to organize the curriculum carefully and properly.

Educational Sociology and Teaching Methods Educational sociologist advocates the use of project method, socialized techniques, group discussion and techniques of group dynamics. They also encourage cooperative learning, problem solving and democratic method of teaching.

Educational Sociology and the Teacher Teacher should be committed to society. A teacher should know about the process of socialization among students, the method of interaction and programs for social development.

T he Role of Education in Society Education serves multiple functions in society. From a sociological perspective, these can be broadly categorized into: Socialization - Schools play a crucial role in socializing young people. 2. Education - individuals learn norms, values, skills, and knowledge necessary to function in society.

Functionalists view education as a means of maintaining social stability and order. According to this perspective, each aspect of education serves a specific function that contributes to the smooth operation of society. FUNCTIONALIST THEORY

CONFLICT THEORY Conflict theorists argue that education perpetuates social inequality. They assert that the education system reinforces existing social class structures and maintains the dominance of powerful groups over marginalized ones

SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONIST THEORY This perspective focuses on the micro-level of social interaction in schools. It examines how teacher expectations, peer interactions, and student identities shape the educational experience and outcomes.
