SODA LIME GLASS History :- Soda lime glass was produced throughout much of Europe for hindered of years. Silica, in the form of sand and lime stone were abundant nearly everywhere. Soda ash was readily obtained from hardwood Forest through venetian glassmakers favoured potash produced by burning seaweed

Introduction Definition “Soda-lime glass, also known as soda-lime-silica glass or soft glass or window glass is a type of glass that contains 70% Silica 15% soda and 9% lime. It is the most common and least expensive type of glass. It chemical Formula is Na2O.CaO.6SiO2 This type of glass makes up about 90% of all manufactured glass. Soda-lime glass is the most common and least expensive form of glass.

STRUCTURE STRUCTURE OF SODA LIME GLASS

RAW MATERIALS Major ingredients Silica (SiO2) 70% Soda (Na2O) 12% Lime (CaO) 8% Minor ingredients Magnesium oxide (MgO) 3% Aluminium oxide ( AlO) 1%

COLOURING MATERIALS Certain Metallic oxides are added to Molten Mass ( Fused Silicates) during the manufacturing Of colouring Soda-Lime glass EXAMPLES Green Yellow Red Blue Lemon yellow Purple Etc . Ferrous iron Feric iron, Na-Uranate Cuporus Oxide Cobalt Oxide CdSO4 MnO ..

Manufacturer process The manufacturer of soda lime glass consist of four phases PREPARATION OF RAW MATERIAL MELTING FORMING FINISHING

First silicone oxide react with Sodium Carbonate at 1100 °C to form Sodium Metasilicate and carbon dioxide SiO2 + Na2CO3  Na2SiO3 + CO Then heat CaCO3 to form Calcium Oxide CaCO3 ----->CaO + CO2 Finally Sodium Metasilicate and Calcium Carbonate combined to form soda-lime glass Na2SiO3 + CaO ------------> NaO.CaO.SiO2 CHEMICAL REACTION

PROPERTIES PROPERTY Refractive Index, ñ % Tranismettence (at 1 Ùm) Density, (g/Cm³) Specific heat, (J/g.°C) Melting Temperature (°C) Softening Point (°C) Vaporization Temperature (°C) VALUE 1.46 70-80 2.5 0.87 1000 700 342 7

Application It has construction application like glass door and window It is used in manufacturing of bottles and and containers for food and deverages It is used as a high voltage insulator, light bulbs, etc It is used as a laboratory ware It is used as an art and decorative object
