INTRODUCTION Water ,water everywhere, but who wants water to drink when one can reach out for a carton of ‘softy’? If you drink sodas- -especially if you drink a lot of them- what are you to make of all the headlines? Do you dismiss them, as the beverage industry does, as bad science and media hype? or is it time to put the can down and take a hard look at what you’re drinking? Aerated or carbonated drinks are a fad among the modern youth who associate these drinks with being ‘cool'. it would be prudent, though, to evaluate the features of these tempting beverages and weigh the consequences of indulging in them .
CAFFEINE * Its a stimulant that is found in soft drinks. * Stimulats central nervous system. * Boosts mood and alleviate headache. * People who ingest caffeine are less likely to have Parkinson’s disease.
Mental Health and Soft drinks Mental health problems due to soft drinks – Soft drinks with artificial sweetening cause increased risk of depression. Soft drinks have 30% increased risk of depression .
Weight issues due to soft drinks A can of cola, for example, contains around 140 calories, 7 teaspoons of sugar but no nutrients. Swapping a daily can for a glass of water will save 51,100 calories in a year – or enough to lose 14lb!
Premature birth of babies Presence of Caffeine: Studies held by the American Pregnancy Association reveal that when a pregnant female consumes over 300 mg of caffeine, it can lead to miscarriage. Zero Nutrition and Unhealthy Calories: Soft drinks offer very little or no nutrition, which means that they add no value to the well being of a pregnant mother.
Effects on digestive and renal systems: Kidney dysfunction: Whether on its own or in the form of glucose-fructose, or as high-fructose corn syrup, soft drinks can increase kidney stone formation and damage kidney cells. Stomach problems : Irritable bowel syndrome,bloating. The caffeine present can worsen episodes of diarrhea.
Healthy alternatives to sodas? A report claims that sugary drinks are responsible for 8,000 new cases of diabetes a year. We all know that fizzy drinks are bad for our health, but the latest research proves just how terrible they are. News that sugary sodas cause 8,000 diabetes cases each year follows a government report last week calling for consumers to minimize their intake of squash and fizzy drinks. Even sugar found in unsweetened fruit juice should be counted as added sugar , the report recommends.

DIET SODA- A BETTER ALTERNATIVE? Pros and Cons of Diet Soda: It is a highly processed food , no nutritional value , highly acidic , contains dye . But it has little to no calories . Diet soda contains Artificial sugar substitutes , they trigger insulin and cause your body to go into fat storage mode . Artificial sugar substitutes may increase the risk of headaches , type 2 diabetes , joint inflammation , neurological problems , stroke , heart disease , cancer and metabolic problems.
WHAT HAPPENS ONE HOUR AFTER DRINKING A CAN OF DIET SODA: First 10 Minutes : Tricks your taste buds & attacks your teeth. 20 Minutes : Can switch on fat storage mode. 40 Minutes : Can cause addiction. 60 Minutes & Beyond : Can deplete nutrients. Make you hungry & thirsty for more.

So what’s the bottomline then? Say no to soft drinks and switch to healthier drinks. Be a healthier you and feel great about your health. Instead of dieting,practically you can achieve a lot by just giving up soft drinks. So why diet? Just do your bit of exercise and switch to healthy drinks. Earlier in the year, scientists issued a warning over fizzy drinks, claiming that they cause a death toll of 184,000 adults every year . But this is not the first time they have been put under the spotlight. Full of sugar, chemicals and (usually) with zero nutritional value, fizzy drinks are something that we have been warned against on countless occasions, even if they do look appealing when the sun comes out. And it's not just the 'full-fat' versions. Diet fizzy drinks can also have extremely harmful effects as explained in the previous slides. Conclusion
