Distillation -
process in which liquid is converted into its
vapour phase at its boiling point and the vapour
is the condensed back to liquid on cooling is
called distillation
Solar distillation -
Process of converting seawater
with remaining salts and other impurities
using sunlight to get your water for
various proposes called as the solar
distillation
Structure & Design
Components of solar still
Tank- 1.
It collect impure water from inlet
It provides support to still
Upper side to tank is insulation
2. Transperant glass
Collect sunlight and transfer into still
it is outer cover of still
3. Inlet filter
To collect the impure water thoughstill
4.Insulation
Resistance to change in temperature inside the still
Present above the tank
5. Black absorbing plate
Due to this higher sunlight absorbed
very important component
above it impure water is present
6.Outlet
Pure water or distilled water is passed through outlet for verious purposes
Many still PVC pipes are directly connected to outlet

Due to radiation from sun falling on transperant glass of the solar still
The pure water get evaporated on the transperant glass due to this water
droplets are condensed on it
Working
This evaporated water comes at bottom of evaporated
glass due to the slop this is nothing but distilled water or
purified water and this water is collected by PVC pipe
through outlet
Types of stills
Single effect basin stills 1.
It includes only one side trapping solar light
Efficiency range is about 20-25%
Cover can be plastic or glass
Daily output of pure water is greatest in early evening
2. Multiple effect basin stills
For trapping solar energy 2 or more compartments are present
Efficiency is greater than single still basin
Efficiency is about 35% or more
3. Wick stills
Water flow Slowly through a porous, radiation absorbing pad called as Wilk
Water heated quickly and to a high temperature
4. Emergency stills
To provide emergancy drinking water on land, very simple still can be made
It makes use of moisture
All that requirement is plastic cover, bowl, bucket.
