Short Summary of “Sons and lovers”: “Sons and Lovers “ written by D. H. Lawrence is the story of Paul, a man who is basically controlled by his mother. She was unhappy in her own marriage life and focuses on Paul when he has been violently ill. The relationship between mother and son becomes more and more unhealthy over time and assumes an Oedipal aspect .
Main Theme of the Novel:
Oedipus Complex in the Novel: 1. Oedipus Complex was postulated by Sigmund Freud . It is a complex of emotions whereby a child develops unconscious sexual desire for his mother and secretly wishes to eliminate his father. 2. Mrs. Morel transfers her love onto children and here is the first problematization presented by Lawrence in Oedipus Complex. 3. The relationship here is reciprocal-the mother too lover her sons.
The father presented Unfavorable: 1. The father is an outsider in the home because he has denied God in him. He does not share his emotions and feelings with the family members. He spend ms much of his time in the mine and when he comes home. he drinks alcohol to free himself from tiredness and frustration. Due to his bullying nature and drinking habit everyone treats him as an outsider. 2. Conflict between teenage psychology and adult psychology generation gap also brings conflict between parents and children.
The importance of the novel : A novel portrays this nature of life making the reader realize that life itself is the reason for living. The end result of novel is the whole man alive. Thus Lawrence assert that the novel is a book that can touch the life of a whole man alive and that is why the novel written .
