Etymology partial 23. 5 ‘ Partial ’ comes from the Old French word  parcial  and directly from the Medieval Latin word  partialis meaning ‘divisible’. In turn, these words come from the Latin word  pars meaning ‘a part, piece, a share, a division’.  The meaning ‘to be biased or one-sided, favouring one side more than the other’, originated in the early 15 th Century. It is important that judges and referees remain im partial and have no preferred side. The meaning of ‘not whole or incomplete’ originated in the late 14 th Century. pars forms part of the following words: partner – someone you share with. department – one of the sections/parts of a larger organisation/shop. compartment – separate parts of an object that is used for keeping things in. portion – A small part of something larger especially food.
