Spina Bifida DEFINATION Spina bifida is a malformation of spine in which posterior partion of lumina of vertebrea fail to close with or without defective development of spinal cord.

INCIDENCE Spina bifida is the most common development defect of CNS , occuring in about 1 or 2 per 1000live births.

ETIOLOGY Maternal daibetes Family history Obesity Increase body temperature from fever or external source Medication such as some anticonvulsants Pregnant women taking valporic acid have an increase risk of having children with spina bifida Genetic basis Folic acid deficiency

CLASSIFICATION Spina bifida cystica Meningocele Myelomeningocele Spina bifida occulta

HYDROCEPHALUS Accumulation eccesive amount of csf within the ventricals of the brain due to imbalance between absorption or production of csf Result in head enlargment and increase ICP
