Spore Formation In Rhizopus Biology Art Integration

Activity Aim : to under asexual reproduction by spore formation in Rhizopus. Materials required : a bread, some water Procedure : take a bread and moisten it by sprinkling on some drops of water, keep this moist bread in a warm, humid place. Observations : after few days, we will find a cotton thread like structures on the surface of bread. These are called spores. Result : Rhizopus reproduces by asexual mo de of reproduction i.e. By spore formation.

Observations of the experiment Tiny thread structures has grown on the surface of bread when kept in warm place for some days. The name of this fungi is Rhizopus stolonifer .

Structure of Rhizopus Rhizopus is a genus of saprophytic and parasitic fungi. They are used to produce various chemicals and alcohols. It is a genus under the phylum zygomycota . They have cottony appearance and consists of: Fine thread like projections called hyphae. A thin stem Tiny blob like structure called sporangia. The sporangia contains hundreds of immature spores inside which are protected by a thin coat. The picture on the right shows rhizopus when viewed under microscope.

Reproduction in Rhizopus The tiny blob like structure called sporangia has hundreds of spores inside. When there are favourable conditions i.e. Warm and humid atmosphere. The sporangia bursts and spores gets released in the atmosphere. These spores travels large distances in air and when they get suitable conditions, they germinate and grow into new Rhizopus body. This method of reproduction is known as spore formation. Apart from fungi, various bacteria, algae and plants reproduce by this method.
