HIISTOY OF SPORTS IN INDIA The history of sports in India dates back to the Vedic era. Physical culture in ancient India was fed by a powerful fuel- religious rites. There were some well-defined values like the  mantra  in the Atharva-Veda, saying," Duty is in my right hand and the fruits of victory in my left". In India, dehvada or the body-way is defined as "one of the ways to full realization. " In the day and age of the Rig-Veda , Ramayana  and  Mahabharata  men of stature and circumstance were expected to be competent in chariot-racing, archery, horsemanship, military tactics, wrestling, weight-lifting, swimming and hunting .

EVOLUTION OF SPORT AFTER INDEPENDENCE India is home to a diverse population playing many different sports across the country.   Football  is a popular sport in some of the Indian states. The country has won eight  Olympic gold medals  in  field hockey , another popular game in India.   Kabaddi , an indigenous sport is popular in rural India. Several games originated in India including  Chess ,  Snooker  and other regional games. India has won medals in  Badminton ,  Kabaddi ,  Hockey  and many other sports and disciplines. Cricket is the most played sport followed by Badminton and Football.

VARIOUS SPORTS PLAYED IN INDIA Field hockey Field hockey was considered to be the national game of India, but this has been recently denied by the Government of India, clarifying on a Right to Information Act (RTI) filed that India has not declared any sport as the national game. Until the mid-1970s, India dominated international field hockey, winning eight Olympic gold medals and won the men's Hockey World Cup held in 1975. Since then, barring a gold medal in the 1980 Olympics, India's performance in field hockey has been dismal, with other hockey-playing nations such as Australia, Netherlands and Germany improving their standards and catching up with India.

Tennis Tennis is a sport among Indians in urban areas. Tennis has gained popularity after the exploits of Vijay Amritraj . India's fortunes in Grand Slam singles have been unimpressive, although Leander Paes  won a singles bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics. Since the late 1990s India has had impressive results in Grand Slam doubles, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have won many men's doubles and mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.  Sania Mirza  is the most notable Indian woman tennis player, having won a WTA title and breaking into the Top 30 WTA rankings, also winning three Grand Slam doubles events, the first at Wimbledon in 2015. On the men's side, young  Somdev Devvarman  and Yuki Bhambri  are flying India's flag on the ATP Tour. Yuki was the Australian Open junior singles champion in 2009

Badminton Badminton is played widely in India and it is one of the most popular sports in India. Badminton's popularity has grown in these years. Indian shuttler   Saina Nehwal  has been ranked in the top-10 rankings since 2010, peaking at no. 1 in 2015 India has won medals at the BWF World Championships as well, with Padukone winning in 1982. The doubles pairing of Gutta and Ponnappa became the first women to win the medal when they won the bronze in 2011. Sindhu won consecutive medals at 2013 and 2014 editions. Nehwal won a silver at 2015 Championships. Badminton is a fast growing sport in India

Wrestling Considered one of the most ancient and oldest sports in the world, wrestling in India has a glorious past. The sport of wrestling began its journey in India several centuries ago, during the Middle Ages. Wrestling is among the most prestigious and oldest events in the Olympic Games. It was included in the Olympics in 708 BC. In India, wrestling is mostly known as  Malla-Yuddha . Wrestling in India is also known as  dangal ,  and it is the basic form of a wrestling tournament.

SPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA Sports Authority of India , the field arm of the Ministry, supports and nurtures talent in youth, and provides them with requisite infrastructure, equipment, coaching facilities and competition exposure. Dorabji Tata, with the support of Dr. A.G. Noehren , then director of   YMCA, established the Indian Olympic Association(IOA) in 1927. IOA is responsible for the Indian continent’s participation in the  Olympic Games ,  Commonwealth Games ,  Asian Games  (outdoor, indoor and beach), and  South Asian Games . The selection of the national teams is done by the respective national federations and then recommend to IOA for official sponsorship for participation in the games conducted under the auspices of the  International Olympic Committee ,  Olympic Council of Asia ,  Commonwealth Games Federation , and SAG Each Olympic and non-Olympic sport has a federation at the national level.

POLITICS IN SPORTS Politics are sports are two different things, but in India, it’s not different. Politics in sports is the major reason behind the poor performance of India. India is country of 1.25 billion population, still got only 2 medals in  Rio Olympics . One silver and a bronze. Two girls of India won the Olympic medals. In history of Olympics, only Abhinav Bindra won gold medal in shooting for India. There are many reasons behind this scenario, but one of most valid reason is politics in sports. It’s very unfortunate that sports ministers are those people who doesn’t have any knowledge about sports

POLITICS IN SPORTS I n India most of the sports organizations are controlled by politicians. Politics in sports is in every sports. According to a report India can get 10 Medals in 2020 if India spend 480 crore rupees on players.

C ricket overpowering other sports in India Indians eat, live, sleep, talk and walk cricket. W e all know that hockey is our national game but in practical vision its cricket maniac all over.   No one remembers that in Shooting, Gagan Narang won four Gold medals in Common Wealth Games2010, or  Indian World Champion wrestler Sushil kumar has won the gold medal in FILA 2010 World Wrestling Championships or Olympic bronze medals won by tennis star Leander Paes (Atlanta, 1996), but  Anil Kumble's 10-wicket haul, Harbhajan's hat-trick, and Virender Sehwag's 309 will be evergreen in memory

Cricket in India is becoming an obstacle in the progress of other sports. M ercialization and the advertising world have promoted cricket to an extent that it has become a Mount Everest, which is badly affecting other sports in the country. An equal exposure is not given to all sports in the country. New comers in cricket sport get name & fame in a short span. But its not happen with other sports players.

Sports as a career in India Sports, which was traditionally considered a hobby especially in India, is now being taken seriously as a career option. With the country's medal performance in wrestling, badminton, boxing , etc at the 2012 London Olympics and with F1 coming to India, its just not cricket which is a rage among the youth. Games and sports are an essential part of Indian culture and if we talk about cricket it is like a religion in India and like Sachin Tendulkar who is well known as father of cricket the success of Indian sports people in recent international sporting events has brought the focus to sports careers.
