About This Presentation

Stages of development

Slide Content

The stages of development

Learning objectives At the end of the lesson, learners are able to: name the key stages in human development define the terms childhood and adolescence learn the characteristics of children and adolescents 2

pre-natal infancy childhood adolescence adulthood old age The Stages of Development The key stages in the life cycle of a human are as follows:

Pre-natal

Pre-natal (conception to birth) tremendous growth from a single cell to an organism all of the major structures of the body are forming during this stage includes the germinal, embryo, and fetal period. 5

Infancy

Infancy and toddlerhood (birth to 2 years) Newborn has keen sense of hearing but very poor vision extreme dependence on adults Beginning of many psychological activities 7

childhood

Childhood is the period between the end of infancy and the onset of puberty, marking the beginning of adolescence.

childhood OVERVIEW OF THE STAGES OF CHILDHOOD

EARLY CHILDHOOD (3-5 years old) referred to as the preschool years learning language gaining a sense of self and greater independence different conceptions of size, time, space, and distance. considered as the toy stage, questioning age, and teachable age 11

Late childhood (6-12 years old) comprise much of what children experience at this age is connected to their involvement in early grades of school achievement becomes a more central theme of the child’s world and self-control increases growth rates slow down and children are able to refine their motor skills Gang stage or troublesome stage Mastery of reading, writing, and arithmetic skills 12

adolescence

Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to legal adulthood.

ADOLESCENCE (13-18 YEARS OLD) period of dramatic physical change a time of cognitive change sense of invincibility transitional stage from childhood to adulthood pursuit of independence and identity are prominent thoughts get more logical, abstract and idealistic 15

adulthood

Adulthood is the period in the human lifespan in which full physical and intellectual maturity have been attained.

adulthood OVERVIEW OF THE STAGES OF ADULTHOOD

Early adulthood (19-29 years old) physiological peak most at risk for involvement in crimes and substance abuse a time for focusing more on the future love and career are the primary concerns at this stage 19

middle adulthood (30-60 years old) aging becomes more noticeable peak of productivity in love and work period of gaining expertise a time of assisting the next generation in becoming competent and mature individuals 20

late adulthood (61 years old and above) 2 categories: young old (65-79 years old) and old old (80 and older) 21

22 CHARACTERISTICS OF CHILDREN

23 Dependency:  having a need for the support of something or someone in order to continue existing or to thrive. Vulnerability:  being more easily physically, emotionally, or mentally hurt, influenced, or attacked. Resilience:  the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress.

24 CHARACTERISTICS OF ADOLOESCENCE

25 Rapid Growth and Biological Changes Appearance Consciousness Sexual Attraction Cognitive Development Career Consciousness

ISSUES ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Learning Outcome At the end of this topic, you should be able to: 1. Explain every issue of development with regards to human development. 2. Justify every issue on development as to how it affects the learner's behavior. 3. Advocate your stand about human development in light to its processes.

INTRODUCTION According to Berk, L. E. (2018) people have personal views on human development that help them understand themselves and others, but these are less formal than academic theories. Scholars use research-based models to offer detailed and well-supported explanations of human development.

NATURE VS NURTURE refers to biological heredity and genetic predisposition inherited by individuals from their parents at birth. NATURE refers to environmental experiences that influence individuals development. NURTURE

CONTINUITY VS DISCONTINUITY

CONTINUITY VS DISCONTINUITY CONTINUITY DISCONTINUITY Foc uses on the extent to which development involves gradual, cumulative change Distinct change. The discontinuity view sees development as more abrupt-a succession of changes that produce different behaviors in different age-specific life periods called stages

STABILITY VS. CHANGE

STABILITY VS. CHANGE STABILITY CHANGE - Stability suggests that certain traits, behaviors, or attributes remain relatively constant over time. Change can undergo significant transformations throughout their lives.

Development is not all nature or all nurture, not all continuity or discontinuity and not all stability or all change (Lerner, 1998 as quoted by Santrock, 2002). Nature and nurture, continuity and discontinuity, stability and change characterize our life-span development. The key to development is the INTERACTION of nature and nurture rather than either factor alone (Rutter, 2001 as quoted by Santrock, 2002). In other words, it is a matter of "both and not "either-or" Just go back to the quote beneath the title of this lesson and the message gets crystal clear. SUMMARY
