Asageneralruleofthumb,“families”ofcategoriesdefinetheproductandsystemtype(e.g.FlowMeasuring
Devices,PressureMeasuringDevices,…),“sub-families”definethefunction,whilethe“categories”aredescribedby
theoperatingtechnologythatisusedinordertoachievethemeasurement(e.g.MagneticFlowMeters,Ultrasonic
FlowMeters,…).
LocalControllershavenotbeenconsideredsincenotthatfrequentanymoreintheplant.Thatappliesalso,in
general,topneumatic-drivenapplications.
Control Systems
•ThisFamilydescribeasetofdevicesthatmanages,commands,
directsorregulatesthebehaviourofotherdevices,systems,
machinesandprocesses.
•ICSS(IntegratedControlandSafetySystem)identifysystemsthat
havecontrolandsecurityfunctions(SIS,F&G,..)andaredelivered
throughseparated«machines»,butintegratedatphysicalaswellas
programminglevel.
•Generallyspeaking,theworkIntegrateddefinedasetofsystems–or
functions–separatedbutbasedonthesametechnologyoron
technologieswithhighlevelofinterfacesamongthemselves,and
frequentlymanufacturedbythesamevendor.

(thatidentifiestheactionofEmergencyShutdown).
•Fire&Gas(F&G),EmergencyShutdown(ESD)andEmergency
Depressurization(EDP)aremainlyreferredasSystems,but–incase
ofIntegratedControlandSafetySystems–theyrepresent
“functions”.
