STATION ACCESSIBILITY PLAN STUDY AREA - VIJAYNAGAR, BENGALURU, KARNATAKA SUMMER INTERNSHIP 2015 Mentors : Yougal Tak Sonal Kulkarni Ragini Nagisetty Project Team : Ramkrishna J Shivuprasad G Srinivas B V Keerthi G B

SAP is to be prepared within the overall framework of the National Urban Transport Policy (2006) . PRIME FOCUS – equitable allocation of road space with people, rather than vehicles encourage greater use of public transport and non-motorized modes. Safe access to station. ABOUT STATION ACCESSIBILITY PLAN – PROJECT BREIF AIM - To encourage sustainable modes of transport by i ntegrating walking, bicycling, public transport and intermediate public transport (IPT). OBJECTIVES - Ensure seamless connectivity between the metro and other modes of transport Improve non-motorized access to the metro station & surrounding areas Propose DCR to facilitate TOD and non-motorized access Why is Safe Access important? What does it cover? • Pedestrian & Bicyclists- NMT Prioritization • Multimodal Integration • First and Last mile connectivity • Minimize Traffic conflicts- pedestrian & vehicular • Upgraded infrastructure facilities VIJAYNAGAR METRO STATION ENTRANCE BANGLORE METRO RAIL ALIGNMENT – PHASE I BMRCL is working on Phase-I which is divided into 4 reaches. Our Project comes under Reach-2 (Mysore Road- Magadi Road).

GLIMPSES OF VIJAYNAGAR METRO STATION

VIJAYNAGAR: HOUSEHOLD SURVEY ANALYSIS (2500 SAMPLES) Dominant age group is 30-60

VIJAYNAGAR: HOUSEHOLD SURVEY ANALYSIS (2500 SAMPLES) Since, all the parameters of condition of footpath are almost in the same range. So, there is a need of equal improvement of all parameters. The blocking of footpath is mainly due to parking. So, there is a need of on street parking (i.e., parallel on street parking). Since, other type of parking will take more carriageway width.) 30° parking - 4.66m 45° parking - 5.31m

A FEW STEPS TOWARDS SAFE ACCESSIBILITY

PEDESTRIAN WALKABILITY INDEX WHAT IS IT? SAFETY AND SECURITY POLICY SUPPORT CONVEINIENCE/ AESTHETICS Safety measures at intersections Feeing of being safe Pedestrian planning programs City plans – Pedestrian networks Length of the Road to cross Coverage from weather Elements (Tree canopy) Footpath blocks( parked trees or poles can be obstruction)

TO FULFILL THE NEED, TAKE THE LEAD Assign small management tasks to the residents and in return recognise them for their work. This would reduce enforcement issues and ease out the pressure from local civic authorities. Community participation is the need of the hour, as all the issues cannot be solved by the local authorities as well as planners. To develop a sense of awareness and responsibility among the residents of Vijayanagar , towards the betterment of their locality.

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS ENFORCEMENT MANAGEMENT PLANNING Street Vending Act 2014 should be implemented in certain areas (Informal Markets) Levy taxes on On- street parking. Implementation of building bylaws (setbacks). Signal synchronization at major intersections Provision of dedicated cycle tracks, parking spaces, pedestrian walkways. Provision of ramps on footpath to ensure accessibility to the vulnerable groups. After every 500m there should be a dustbin. Encouraging community participation.

Thank you
