SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE CONTROL PROGRAMME BY KANCHAN CHAUHAN P.G. COLLEGE OF NURSING BHILAI C.G.

INTRODUCTION The National STD control programme in India was started in 1946 and mission to reduce the occurrence of STDs through disease surveillance, case and outbreak investigation, screening, preventive therapy, diagnosis, case management and education.

OBJECTIVES Reduce STD cases and there by control HIV transmission by minimizing the risk factor. Prevent the short term as well as long term morbidity and mortality due to STD.

STRATEGIES The broad strategies for controlling STD for the prevention and control of AIDS in India are the following- Prevention of transmission of STD/HIV infection through IEC and promotion of safer sexual behaviour by the use of condom. Adequate and comprehensive case management including diagnosis, treatment, individual counselling, partner notification and screening for other diseases. Early diagnosis and treatment of mostly asymptomatic infections through case finding and screening.

ACTIONS The major actions have been taken along the suggested in strategies. Training of health care workers in both public and private sector in comprehensive STD case management. Development of appropriate laboratory services for the diagnosis of STD. Conduct of microbiological , socio-behavioural and operational research. Surveillance to assess the epidemiological situation, and monitor and evaluate the ongoing STD control programme. Strengthening the existing facilities and structure of STD clinics.

THE ACTIVITIES ARE CARRIED OUT IN PHC Maintaining confidentiality of STD patients seeking treatment. Adequate privacy should be provided in the clinics. Training of Doctor’s clinical training for Doctors from peripheries in the teaching institutions. Adequate laboratory facilities and drugs for treating STDs. The drugs are supplied by Government to the STD clinics. Consumable like disposable syringes and examination gloves etc. Some of NGOs in their projects have arranged centres and facilities for diagnosis and treatment of STDs. Technical and financial assistance for this is given by state AIDS control society.

FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE IN CONTROL OF STD In the clinic, during home visits, or in the community work, community health nurse should pay full attention to prevent and control sexually transmitted diseases. Detecting cases or persons suffering from sexually transmitted disease. Identifying and diagnosing the sexually transmitted diseases. Finding the contact of sexually transmitted diseases. Providing treatment to the patient according to need. Providing counselling and guidance to the patient. Giving sexual health education.

Sexual health & responsibilities of the nurse Having full information regarding all matters of sexuality. This includes all, right from the time of conception to death. Getting sex related information from patient and his family. Assessment of the sexual health of the patient. Knowing the sexual problems of the patient. Providing information for proper therapy for the sexual problem and providing nursing care related to it. Giving sex education and counselling and guidance to persons suffering from sexual disease.
