2. STEERING GEARS The steering gear is a device for converting the rotary motion of the steering line motion of the linkages with a mechanical advantages. If the steering wheel is connected directly to the steering linkages it would required a effort to move the front wheel A higher steering ratio means that you have to turn the steering wheel more to get the wheels turning ,but it will be easier to turn the steering wheel.

6. Worm and wheel steering gear The system consists of worm wheel which is carried in bearings in a cast iron case . The case is made in halves . The outer end of the worm wheel is fixed to a drop arm which is having ball end to connect the side rod is connected to the steering arm which is fixed to the stub axles . The worm which is keyed on to a steering shaft have a mesh with the worm wheel . The steering wheel is mounted at the upper end of the steering shaft.

7. Advantages of worm and wheel steering gear Worm gears can be used to either greatly increase torque or greatly reduced speed. They are also the smoothest and quietest of the gear systems . It has the good meshing effectiveness. They occupy less space as compared to other gears They are self-locking.

8. Disadvantages of worm and wheel steering gear Worm gear materials are expensive. Worm drives have high power losses and low transmission efficiency. They produce a lot of heat
