This presentation will inform about the fitness testing by step test.
This will enhance the knowledge of types of step test.
It will give detail information of Harvard step test, Queens college step test, Canadian step test.
It will describe the procedure, required equipment and score sheet of the test.
It will give the formula of vo2 max also the scoring criteria of male and female.
It will also provide the physical fitness index criteria for both male and female.
It will compare the test amongst themselves.

STEP TEST DR. ANERI PATWARI MPT: CARDIORESPIRATORY ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
TYPES
PREPARE EQUIPMENT Prepare forms for recording results Check that all of the required equipment is at hand and functional. Calibrate the equipment if required. Adjust equipment to suit the subject (e.g. adjust cycle ergometer seat height) Ensure the equipment and testing area is safe from hazards. Have first-aid equipment nearby and an emergency procedure prepared.
PRE-TEST MEASURES Perform screening of health risks and obtain informed consent.. Maybe get them to fill in a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire — a list of questions which helps to determine how safe it is for someone to start an exercise program, particularly for someone elderley and/or unfit. There is an information sheet to provide athletes prior to testing. Record test conditions, such as date, weather, surface, equipment used (see more about environmental conditions ) Record basic subject information, such name, age, height , body weight , gender. Obtain resting heart rate and blood pressure measurements.
1. THE HARVARD STEP TEST The Harvard Step test is a test of aerobic fitness, developed by Brouha et al. (1943) in the Harvard Fatigue Laboratories during WWII. The features of this test is that it is simple to conduct and requires minimal equipment. Participants step at a rate of 30 steps per minute for 5 minutes or until exhaustion. There are many other variations of step tests too.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT step or platform 20 inches (50.8 cm) high for men, 40 cm (16 inches) for women stopwatch metronome or cadence tape.
PROCEDURE
SCORING ACCORDING TO PHYSICAL FITNESS INDEX

VO 2max
FITNESS ACCORDING TO V02 MAX FEMALES MALES
2. THE QUEENS COLLEGE STEP TEST The Queens College Step test is one of many variations of step test procedures, used to determine aerobic fitness. Compared to the Harvard Step Test , this version has a lower step height, slower cadence, shorter test duration and more simple analysis.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT 16.25 inches / 41.3 cm step, stopwatch , metronome or cadence tape, heart rate monitor (optional).
PROCEDURE
VO 2max
FITNESS ACCORDING TO V02 MAX MALE FEMALE

3. CANADIAN STEP TEST The Canadian Home Fitness Step Test was specifically developed for a fitness survey of the Canadian people in the early 1980s. It is a test of aerobic fitness which people could perform themselves at home. This is a simple, progressive, submaximal aerobic step test in which participants step up and down a 16 inch double step following the audio signals
PURPOSE T his test is designed for the measurement of aerobic fitness of the general population, which is important for overall health Performing such a test has the benefit of increasing fitness awareness, and as a rough estimate of personal fitness can be used to monitor and motivate those undertaking an exercise program.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT Double 20.3 cm (8 inch) step such as may be found in most north american homes, the CHFT long-playing record or tape recording and player. If accuracy is important, the player speed should be calibrated.
PROCEDURE
SCORING A simple categorization of fitness (undesirable, minimum or recommended) is based upon the number of test stages the subject can complete and the heart rate count over 10 seconds between 5 - 15 seconds after finishing the final test stage.
VO 2max VO 2max = 42.5 + 16.6 (E) - 0.12 (M) - 0.12 (HR) - 0.24 (A) where VO 2max is the aerobic power in ml . kg -1 . min -1 , E is the energy cost of the final test stage in l . min -1 (see table below), M is the body mass in kg, HR is the heart rate in beats . min -1 and A is the participant's age in years.
SCORING
COMPARISION HAVARD STEP TEST QUEENS COLLEGE STEP TEST CANADIAN STEP TEST ADVANTAGE This test requires minimal equipment and costs, and can be self-administered. minimal equipment and costs involved, little time required, and can be self-administered. this test was designed to be self-administered. Other than the recording that is required, the test requires simple equipment that can be found in the home and it is easy to conduct. DISADVANTAGE Biomechanical characteristics vary between individuals. For example, considering that the step height is standard, taller people are at an advantage as it will take less energy to step up onto the step. Body weight has also been shown to be a factor. Testing large groups with this test will be time consuming. Biomechanical characteristics vary between individuals (e.g. taller people are at an advantage). Also, apparently the data was formulated from treadmill running, therefore their assumption is that stepping and treadmill running have the same oxygen cost. The tape or LP recording is not readily available outside of Canada. Using the data provided here you may be able to conduct the test without the recording. VALIDITY & RELABILITY correlation to VO 2max has been reported as between 0.6 to 0.8 in numerous studies. test re-test reliability for recovery heart rate has been measured as r = 0.92 validity: correlation between recovery heart rate and VO 2max has been measured as r = -0.75.
