PLANNING A PRESENTATION

Planning your Presentation Before planning the presentation, understanding your assignment plays a major role before presenting it. There are few questions that u need to ask before presenting: Is it a group or individual presentation? What's your topic? What do you know about the topic? What do you want your audience to know?  Is there a time limit or requirement? Are you presenting a paper you wrote?  Are you allowed to use videos? Are you trying to convince them of a particular argument related to an issue? Are you leading discussion on a reading? What's the topic you will be presenting on? Do you get to choose?  What is the purpose of the presentation? Are you summarizing an issue to inform your classmates?

THINKING ABOUT THE GOAL OF THE PRESENTATION Write down your most important points. See if you notice a key point emerging. If your audience were to take away one thing from this presentation, what would it be?   Don't just bombard your audience with facts. Think about what these facts do for your audience. What's the point you're trying to make with the information?

KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE Understand how your topic is relevant and how it will benefit audience’s needs. Don't assume the audience thinks like you. Demographic biases can often separate our ways of thinking. If you're unfamiliar with the audience, speak to the meeting organizer before you begin planning your presentation. It's a good idea to obtain some information on the backgrounds, values, and interests of your audience so that you understand what the audience members might expect from your presentation.

SELECT A TOPIC Content must be correct, factual and well-organized. Invest time choosing a presentation method that resonates with your audience. Ensure your data is factually accurate If possible select a topic that is of interest to the audience and to you.  Ideally, you would have the opportunity to understand your content before giving a presentation Maintains the audience’s attention and clearly articulate your data.

GATHER INFORMATION 03 01 02 04 You want to learn as much as possible about your subject. The more you know, the more confident you will feel when you are presenting and the easier it will be to answer questions. Keep a list of all the sources you use. Information you gather needs to be current and accurate. Be sure you know the difference between fact and opinion.

ORGANIZE THE CONTENT Once you've set up your slides and begin practicing, you may find the content needs reorganization. You may discover information flows better in a different sequence than first thought. Use the slide-sorting feature to change the slide order as necessary.

CHOOSE A TITLE The title is your first opportunity to capture the interest of the audience. Be creative and original. An effective title meets one or more of these criteria: • It is short and to the point. • It is descriptive. • It is provocative. • It is image-making.

PROTECT TIME One rule of thumb is to ensure your presentation can fit within 80 percent of the time allowed. Keep your answers clear and concise. Brevity ensures time for everyone's questions. When you prepare for your next presentation, consider the experience your audience desires. Create a presentation that is unique, simple and straightforward. Mind your time and you'll make such an impact on the audience that they will be influenced to act upon what you have to say.
