PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

ABOUT PWD The Public Works Department conducts the construction, improvement, strengthening and maintenance of roads and bridges. The responsibility of construction of certain buildings of the state government and their maintenance is also upon this department. The department undertakes the maintenance of National Highways passing through Uttar Pradesh which are not covered by the National Highways Authority for which funds are provided by the Government of India. The task of monitoring the works under different schemes and ensuring high quality of work has been assigned to 18 zonal Chief Engineers.

HISTORY From the year 1773 to 1858 in the three existing Presidencies in ‘British India' there were separate Military Councils for the construction of government works. In 1850, a commission under the ‘Court of Directors’ recommended that under 'local government' the execution of civil and military public affairs works should be executed under 'Local Government' within their boundaries. In Uttar Pradesh (then North West Province) Public Works Department was established around 1854 the same time as in Punjab. At that time the following tasks were performed under, Public works department (PWD) of India: 1.Building and Road works 2. Irrigation works 3.Railway works 4.Military works In 1919 the Indian Government passed law to make the Public Works Department as the provincial Service.

MISSION-VISION STATEMENT Public Works Department, Uttar Pradesh aims at re-formation, restoration, improvement and maintenance of roads, bridges, railway upstream bridges/ downstream bridges/ bypass and ring road and connecting villages to paved roads. It also aims to ensure the quality and timeliness in construction works along with maintenance of national highways passing through the state and preventing encroachment on roads constructed by the department.

STRENTHENING AND WIDENING OF ROAD

PROJECT DETAILS Project type Widening and Strengthening of Road Project cost 10.0824 crores Location Sarh to Sarsaul Block Sarsaul Length of Road 9.17 km Existing Road Width 3 m to 5.5 m (widening)

CROSS SECTION OF PAVEMENT

COMPONENTS OF PAVEMENT Subgrade – Compacted Soil Sub-base course – Granular Sub-base ( 200 mm ) (GSB) Base course – Water bound macadam ( 75 mm )(G2) Surface course – Dense bitumen macadam ( 50 mm )(BM) Binder course – Bitumen concrete ( 50 mm ) Bituminous Macadam Density -- 2.2Kg/m 3 Prime Coat – 0.7 Kg/m 2 Tack Coat – 0.2 Kg/m 2

SUB GRADE Layer of natural soil prepared to receive the stresses from the layers above.

SUB-BASE COURSE The sub-base course is the layer of material beneath the base course and the primary functions are to provide structural support, improve drainage

BASE COURSE The base course is the layer of material immediately beneath the surface of binder course. It may be composed of crushed stone, crushed slag, and other untreated or stabilized materials.

PRIME COAT Prime coat is sprayed with the help of emulsion sprayer on the wet mix macadam with the range of 0.7 Kg/m 2 It provides bonding between two layers.

BINDER COURSE The DBM is laid with the help of sensor paver. The leveling is done while laying for maintaining camber. It is laid for a thickness of 50 mm. Compaction is done by Roller.

TACK COAT Tack coat is sprayed with the help of emulsion sprayer on the Dense bituminous macadam with the range of 0.2 Kg/m 2

SURFACE COURSE Surface course is the layer directly in contact with traffic loads and generally contains superior quality materials. They are usually constructed with dense graded asphalt concrete

SEAL COAT Seal coat is a thin surface treatment used to water-proof the surface and to provide skid resistance

CONCLUSION As the population is increasing day by day and we need to improve our roads for better efficiency in transportation and the roads are to be constructed by keeping in mind the future aspects. This road is been constructed to full fill the requirements of road users.
