The problem of a struggling student Students spending almost 5 years in a school and 8 hours in a day boarding school do not always develop a relationship with the teachers. This can be problematic. Teachers need to develop a trust - based relationship with their students in order to establish a connection with them and to create a safe and effective learning environment. To create this very important relationship, teachers must establish and maintain a line of communication, understanding and compassion with and for their students. As part of a project assigned by Dr. Thangadurai . I am completing this case study in an attempt to understand the world through the eyes of a struggling students.

Purpose / Objective of the study A teacher must understand the lives of his/her students. A trust must be built between student and teacher before any true learning can occur. True learning means, learning that encompasses more than rote memorization and facts. Here my case study is based on a student of class – x ( Barnali Mohapatra ) who despite of being an academically sound student, started showing deterioration in her scores. My objective behind this case study was to understand the circumstances that affect and influence her surrounding environment, life and eventual decision making. With open communication, we could build a trust based relationship with her.

Background The student was performing too well before two/three years. All of sudden, a sharp decline was found in her performances. Consequently, she went into depression. In the course of finding the reason behind it, it was found that the root of the problem was lying in her family. Few years back, her parents were separated. She had to move to her maternal grandmother's house along with her mother. Though people were helpful there, still they had to go through a little financial crunch. Her freedom was curtailed in her granny's house. Several restrictions were imposed on her. It was also found that, her father also had this problem of depression.

Case Evaluation   1.Her behavior inside the classroom started becoming indifferent. During teaching, she was found lost most of the time. If she was told by any teacher to pay attention, her facial expression would change and she would become very stubborn. 2.Though most of the lime she would be answering the questions which were asked in the classroom, but she started scoring less in the exams. 3.Teachers started to reach out to her. But she never opened up. So we had to talk to her mother. After a long conversation, we could know the reason of her mental disturbance.

Strategies adopted Teachers started behaving with her cordially. She was counseled to be more attentive. She was praised for being sincere in her work. The lady teachers used to call her personally, not to counsel her, but to make her comfortable with the teachers. Teachers helped her realize that nothing was abnormal on her part. She started feeling that she was accepted the way she was. As a result, we started noticing changes in her. But along with counseling, she is under medical treatment also. We are helpful that once she joins back, things would be found in a better form.

Challenges It was really challenging to counsel her, because her state of mind had to be taken care of every time she was counseled. Since she is an over sensitive child, teachers had to be patient to listen to her.
