Studies on Bioremediation of Total Solid Disposal Facility Landfill Leachate. By Prantahi Devasani , M.Sc. Microbiology, Roll No: 21031G1901

a. The pharmaceutical and chemical industry generates large volumes of solid wastes from evaporation of the effluents. b. On an average 200 Tons of salt residues are generated in Hyderabad alone. c. There are 105 TSDF facilities in India. The TSDF facilities build Concrete containing tanks lined with water proof polymer membranes to prevent leaching into the ground water. However, the pressure exerted by the huge volumes and the solvents often damage the membranes, the high salt content leads to release of chlorides and sulfates which are corrosive to the concrete lining leading to cracks and pit holes leading to leaching of toxic chemicals into the ground water. The ground water is contaminated and the high salt content leads to salinization of the ground water as well as soil making them unfit for use leading severe health hazards and environmental degradation. Presently, the leachate is being collected in lined ponds and evaporated to reduce the organic and inorganic salts. The corrosive nature of the concentrates (high Boiling components) leads to formation of tarry residues which choke the evaporator equipment and the corrosive liquids degrade the structure of the evaporators leading to high energy and heating costs and system failures. Although data on the composition of the leachate is well documented, sustainable solutions could not be developed. Bioremediation is a solution for obviating these problems. Introduction:

Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs) Hazardous waste management facilities receive hazardous wastes for treatment, storage, or disposal. These facilities are often referred to as treatment, storage, and disposal facilities, or TSDFs. Treatment facilities  use various processes (such as incineration or oxidation) to alter the character or composition of hazardous wastes. Some treatment processes enable waste to be recovered and reused in manufacturing settings, while other treatment processes dramatically reduce the amount of hazardous waste. Storage facilities  temporarily hold hazardous wastes until they are treated or disposed of. Disposal facilities  permanently contain hazardous wastes. The most common type of disposal facility is a landfill, where hazardous wastes are disposed of in carefully constructed units designed to protect groundwater and surface-water resources. Regulations: The treatment, storage, and disposal facility (TSDF) follows the generator and transporter in the chain of waste management activities. The regulations pertaining to TSDFs are more stringent than those which apply to generators or transporters. The unit-specific technical requirements are designed to prevent the release of hazardous waste into the environment. Source: Web

Isolation of microbes capable of degrading pollutants from soil samples. B. Screening of potent microbial strains capable of remediating the leachate sample. C. Preparation of a consortium of microbes for bioremediation of the leachate. D. Studies on optimisation of parameters for effective bioremediation of the leachate. E. Development of a lab scale process for the bioremediation of TSDF landfill leachate. Objectives:

Work Carried out : In the present dissertation thesis, studies are being carried out on the development of a suitable bioremediation system for the treatment of the TSDF leachate. The study includes the isolation, screening and strain improvement of microbes from contaminated soils, biodegradation of the chemical moeities present in the leachate and reduction of chemical oxygen demand present in the leachate. Microbial strains capable of utilizing the chemical constituents of the leachate as carbon and nitrogen sources have been isolated and work on screening and identification of potent microbial strains is underway.
