Subject:- A part of a sentence, the person or thing performing the action is known as Subject. Examples:- Shanaya is writing in her notebook . SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT

Vijay is practicing his dance steps. Verb:- Verb is an action word or a state of being in a sentence. Examples:- Aryan is talking . Arya is learning new words from English vocabulary.

Subject-Verb Agreement:- Relationship between Subject and Verb is called Subject Verb Agreement. Examples:- Nyra is dancing on my favourite song. Anil is singing like a professional singer.

The rules of Sub-Verb Agreement:- Rule 1:- The Verb and the subject must agree in numbers. (Singular and plural) SINGULAR Is Was Has D oes PLURAL A re Were Have Do

If the subject of a sentence is Singular- Verb is singular. Example:- She plays badminton. He plays football. If subject of a sentence is Plural-Verb is plural. Example:- They play throw ball. We like to play football.

Note:- When using a Verb with a singular noun we add an –s to the Verb. When using a Verb with a plural noun we do not add –s to the Verb. Rule 2:- The number of the subject will not change due to the words or phrase between the subject and verb .

Example:- One of the glass is empty . The bouquet of red roses smells so sweet. Rule 3:- Subject that are joined by “and” in a sentence, use a plural Verb. Examples:- Priya and Diya do their work on their own. Vaidehi and Shalini are coming.

Rule 4:- Subjects that are joined by “either” or “neither” use Singular Verb. Examples:- Neither Bhuvi nor Arya is coming today. Either Coffee or Tea ? Rule 5:- When the subject is followed by words such as “as well as”, “along with”, “beside” etc. The Verb is used according to the first subject.

Examples:- Siyona as well as her friends is studying for the exam. Geetu along with her brother is going to school. Rule 6:- The sentences that includes sum of money, period of time or distance etc is considered “as a unit” Singular Verb is used.

Examples:- 1000 Rupees is a high price to pay. 24 hours is required to complete a single day. Rule 7:- Nouns which indicate food, clothing, furniture or stationery are singular and hence take Singular Verb .

Examples:- The Tea pot is kept covered with a lid. This sofa needs repair. Rule 8:- Whenever we refer to a pair of scissors or a pair of jeans we use Singular Verb. Examples:- A pair of crockery is washed and kept for you.

A pair of frocks is hanging on the cloth-line. Rule 9:- Whenever a sentence begins with there, the Verb must agree with real subject that follows. Examples:- There is a honeycomb near the tree. There are many trees in the park.

Rule 10:- If the subjects are referred to as one then the Verb will be Singular. Examples:- Bread and butter tastes good. Cup and saucer is so helpful. Rule 11:- Collective Nouns are considered as Singular and take Singular Verb. Example:- A flock of sheep is grazing the field.
