Learning Subtraction with Our Special Poem By ~Mrs. G.

Welcome to Subtraction Fun! Today you will learn a special poem to help with subtraction You will practice three important subtraction rules Get ready to become subtraction superstars! Opening Circle: Turn to your partner and share one thing you already know about taking away numbers

Our Subtraction Poem More on top? No need to stop! More on the floor? Go next door and get 10 more! Numbers the same? Zero's the game! Let's say it together three times! Think-Pair-Share: What do you think each line means?

Rule 1: More on Top? No Need to Stop! When the top number is bigger, subtraction is easy Just count down or take away Example: 8 - 3 = 5 Example: 9 - 4 = 5 You can do this without any tricks!

Let's Practice Rule 1 Try these problems: 7 - 2 = ? Try this one: 6 - 1 = ? Try this one: 9 - 3 = ? Compass Points: Move to North if your answer is 5, South if it's 6, East if it's 5, West if it's 6 Remember: More on top? No need to stop!

Rule 2: More on the Floor? Go Next Door! When the bottom number is bigger, we need help We "go next door" to borrow 10 Example: 52 - 8 becomes 42 - 8 = 44 (but we borrowed, so it's really 44) This is like asking your neighbor for help! Back-to-Back, Face-to-Face: Explain to your partner what "go next door" means

Practice Rule 2 Together Let's try: 43 - 7 The 3 is smaller than 7, so we go next door We borrow 10 from the 4 Now we have 13 - 7 = 6 Think-Pair-Share: Can you find the pattern in borrowing?

Rule 3: Numbers the Same? Zero's the Game! When both numbers are exactly the same, the answer is always 0 Example: 5 - 5 = 0 Example: 8 - 8 = 0 Example: 3 - 3 = 0 It's like having 5 cookies and eating all 5 - you have 0 left!

Zero Practice Time What is 4 - 4? What is 7 - 7? What is 2 - 2? Compass Points: If all your answers were 0, go to North. If you got different answers, go to South for help Remember: Numbers the same? Zero's the game!

Let's Review Our Poem More on top? No need to stop! More on the floor? Go next door and get 10 more! Numbers the same? Zero's the game! Learning Target Check-in: Can you say the poem without looking? Which rule helps you the most?

Celebration and Next Steps You learned three important subtraction rules today You can use this poem to help you solve problems Practice saying the poem at home Closing Circle: Share one thing you learned about subtraction today Exit Ticket: Draw a picture showing your favorite subtraction rule
