Surah al mulk

It was revealed in Mecca, it is thirty passages long, consisting of three hundred and thirty words and one thousand three hundred letters. (Tafsir Al-Khateeb Al-Sharabini Vol .3 P.367.) Ibn Shihab said that is it known as 'the disputer' as it disputes with those of the grave! (Ibid) Those of the grave meaning the two angels Munkar and Nakir who question the servant after they are buried and their relatives have gone. All of the Quran is blessed and parts of the Quran we have been informed about their specific blessing and others we have not. One such Surah that we have been informed about its blessing is Surah Mulk. The second line reads, “He who created death and life to test you; which of you have the best actions.” Life and death are part of our lives whether we are aware of it or not. Someone has died whilst you are reading this and somewhere a child has been born. Notice that death comes first as this is much harder to deal with its consequences than life. When death comes it takes us out of our comfort zones as it scares us into considering our mortality. Life can be a trail for parents who do not wish to have children. They worry about provision and other unnecessary concerns. When you ponder these meanings then you begin to think about the ephemeral nature of life and then you begin to contemplate the afterlife. less

1. Surah Al Mulk سُوۡرَةُ المُلک 1

2. بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡم  Allah in the name of The Most Affectionate, the Merciful. . 2

3. تَبٰرَكَ الَّذِىۡ بِيَدِهِ الۡمُلۡكُ وَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ قَدِيۡرُۙ‏ ﴿۱﴾  Immensely blessed is He in Whose control is the entire Kingdom, and He has authority over every thing. 3

4.   اۨلَّذِىۡ خَلَقَ الۡمَوۡتَ وَالۡحَيٰوةَ لِيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ اَيُّكُمۡ اَحۡسَنُ عَمَلًا  ؕ وَهُوَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡغَفُوۡرُۙ‏ ﴿۲﴾  He, Who has created death and life that He might test you, as to whose work, is excellent among you. And He is the Esteemed one the Forgiving. 4

5. الَّذِىۡ خَلَقَ سَبۡعَ سَمٰوٰتٍ طِبَاقًا‌ ؕ مَا تَرٰى فِىۡ خَلۡقِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ مِنۡ تَفٰوُتٍ‌ ؕ فَارۡجِعِ الۡبَصَرَۙ هَلۡ تَرٰى مِنۡ فُطُوۡرٍ‏  Who made seven heavens one upon the other. What difference do you see in the making of the Most Affectionate ? Then look again carefully, do you see any crack? 5

6.  ثُمَّ ارۡجِعِ الۡبَصَرَ كَرَّتَيۡنِ يَنۡقَلِبۡ اِلَيۡكَ الۡبَصَرُ خَاسِئًا وَّهُوَ حَسِيۡرٌ‏ ﴿۴﴾  Then look again and again, the sight will return back to you defeated and fatigued. 6

7.  وَلَـقَدۡ زَيَّـنَّا السَّمَآءَ الدُّنۡيَا بِمَصَابِيۡحَ وَجَعَلۡنٰهَا رُجُوۡمًا لِّلشَّيٰطِيۡنِ‌ وَاَعۡتَدۡنَا لَهُمۡ عَذَابَ السَّعِيۡرِ‏ ﴿۵﴾ And undoubtedly, We adorned the lower heaven with lamps, and made them things to beat devils, and prepared for them the torment of blazing fire. 7

8. وَلِلَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا بِرَبِّهِمۡ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ‌ؕ وَبِئۡسَ الۡمَصِيۡرُ‏ ﴿۶﴾  And for those who disbelieved in their Lord, there is the torment of Hell. And what an evil end it is? 8

9.  اِذَاۤ اُلۡقُوۡا فِيۡهَا سَمِعُوۡا لَهَا شَهِيۡقًا وَّهِىَ تَفُوۡرُۙ‏ ﴿۷﴾ When they shall be thrown in it, they will hear the braying as it boils up. 9

10.  تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الۡغَيۡظِ‌ؕ كُلَّمَاۤ اُلۡقِىَ فِيۡهَا فَوۡجٌ سَاَلَهُمۡ خَزَنَـتُهَاۤ اَلَمۡ يَاۡتِكُمۡ نَذِيۡرٌ‏ ﴿۸﴾ It seems that it will almost burst with severe fury. Whenever any group shall be thrown in it, its keepers will ask them, 'Did no warner come to you'? 10

11. قَالُوۡا بَلٰى قَدۡ جَآءَنَا نَذِيۡرٌ  ۙ فَكَذَّبۡنَا وَقُلۡنَا مَا نَزَّلَ اللّٰهُ مِنۡ شَىۡءٍ ۖۚ اِنۡ اَنۡتُمۡ اِلَّا فِىۡ ضَلٰلٍ كَبِيۡرٍ‏ ﴿۹﴾  They will say, 'why not, yes indeed, the warner came to us, but we belied him and said, 'Allah has sent down nothing ; you are not, but in great error". 11

12. وَقَالُوۡا لَوۡ كُنَّا نَسۡمَعُ اَوۡ نَعۡقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِىۡۤ اَصۡحٰبِ السَّعِيۡرِ‏ ﴿۱۰﴾  And they will say, 'if we had heard or reflected, we would not have been among the fellows of the Hell. 12

13.  فَاعۡتَرَفُوۡا بِذَنۡۢبِهِمۡ‌ۚ فَسُحۡقًا لِّاَصۡحٰبِ السَّعِيۡرِ‏ ﴿۱۱﴾  Now they confessed their sins, then Curse be the fellows of the Hell. 13

14.   اِنَّ الَّذِيۡنَ يَخۡشَوۡنَ رَبَّهُمۡ بِالۡغَيۡبِ لَهُمۡ مَّغۡفِرَةٌ وَّاَجۡرٌ كَبِيۡرٌ‏ ﴿۱۲﴾  Undoubtedly, those who fear their Lord unseen, for them is forgiveness and great reward. 14

15.  وَاَسِرُّوۡا قَوۡلَـكُمۡ اَوِ اجۡهَرُوۡا بِهٖؕ اِنَّهٗ عَلِيۡمٌۢ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُوۡرِ‏ ﴿۱۳﴾   And whether you keep your discourse secret or disclose, He knows full well the thoughts of your breasts. 15

16.   اَلَا يَعۡلَمُ مَنۡ خَلَقَؕ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيۡفُ الۡخَبِيۡرُ‏ ﴿۱۴﴾  Will not He Who has created know? And it is He Knowing every subtle, the Aware. 16

17.  هُوَ الَّذِىۡ جَعَلَ لَـكُمُ الۡاَرۡضَ ذَلُوۡلًا فَامۡشُوۡا فِىۡ مَنَاكِبِهَا وَكُلُوۡا مِنۡ رِّزۡقِهٖ‌ؕ وَاِلَيۡهِ النُّشُوۡرُ‏ ﴿۱۵﴾  It is He Who has made the earth submissive to you, therefore traverse through its tracks and eats of His provision . And to Him is the rising up. 17

18.   ءَاَمِنۡتُمۡ مَّنۡ فِىۡ السَّمَآءِ اَنۡ يَّخۡسِفَ بِكُمُ الۡاَرۡضَ فَاِذَا هِىَ تَمُوۡرُۙ‏ ﴿۱۶﴾  Have you become fearless of Him whose Kingdom is in the heaven, that He may bury you in the earth , hence forth it remains shaking? 18

19. اَمۡ اَمِنۡتُمۡ مَّنۡ فِى السَّمَآءِ اَنۡ يُّرۡسِلَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ حَاصِبًا‌ ؕ فَسَتَعۡلَمُوۡنَ كَيۡفَ نَذِيۡرِ‏ ﴿۱۷﴾ Or have you become fearless of Him whoso Kingdom is in the heaven that He may send against you stoning . Now you will know, how was My warning? 19

20.  وَلَـقَدۡ كَذَّبَ الَّذِيۡنَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِهِمۡ فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ نَكِيۡرِ‏ ﴿۱۸﴾ And undoubtedly, those before them belied, then how was My rejection. 20

21.  اَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡا اِلَى الطَّيۡرِ فَوۡقَهُمۡ صٰٓفّٰتٍ وَّيَقۡبِضۡنَؕؔ   ۘ مَا يُمۡسِكُهُنَّ اِلَّا الرَّحۡمٰنُ‌ؕ اِنَّهٗ بِكُلِّ شَىۡءٍۢ بَصِيۡرٌ‏ ﴿۱۹﴾ And have they not seen birds above them, spreading out their wings and closing them? None withholds themselves the Most Affectionate Allah. Undoubtedly, He sees all things. 21

22.  اَمَّنۡ هٰذَا الَّذِىۡ هُوَ جُنۡدٌ لَّكُمۡ يَنۡصُرُكُمۡ مِّنۡ دُوۡنِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ‌ؕ اِنِ الۡكٰفِرُوۡنَ اِلَّا فِىۡ غُرُوۡرٍ‌ۚ‏ ﴿۲۰﴾  Or which is your army that shall help you against the Most Affectionate Allah? The infidels are not but in delusion . 22

23. اَمَّنۡ هٰذَا الَّذِىۡ يَرۡزُقُكُمۡ اِنۡ اَمۡسَكَ رِزۡقَهٗ‌ ۚ بَلۡ لَّجُّوۡا فِىۡ عُتُوٍّ وَّنُفُوۡرٍ‏ ﴿۲۱﴾  Or who is there that can provide you with Sustenance if He were to withhold His provision? Nay, they obstinately persist in insolent impiety and flight (from the Truth). 23

24. اَفَمَنۡ يَّمۡشِىۡ مُكِبًّا عَلٰى وَجۡهِهٖۤ اَهۡدٰٓى اَمَّنۡ يَّمۡشِىۡ سَوِيًّا عَلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُّسۡتَقِيۡمٍ‏ ﴿۲۲﴾ Is he who walks prone on his face better guided than he who walks upright on a straight path? 24

25.  قُلۡ هُوَ الَّذِىۡۤ اَنۡشَاَكُمۡ وَجَعَلَ لَـكُمُ السَّمۡعَ وَالۡاَبۡصَارَ وَ الۡاَفۡـــِٕدَةَ ‌ ؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تَشۡكُرُوۡنَ‏ ﴿۲۳﴾ Say you, 'it is He Who produced you, and made for you ears and eyes and hearts'. How little you accept the truth ? 25

26.  قُلۡ هُوَ الَّذِىۡ ذَرَاَكُمۡ فِى الۡاَرۡضِ وَاِلَيۡهِ تُحۡشَرُوۡنَ‏ ﴿۲۴﴾ Say you, 'it is He Who has spread you in the earth, and towards Him you shall be raised. 26

27.  وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ مَتٰى هٰذَا الۡوَعۡدُ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ‏ ﴿۲۵﴾  And they say, 'when this promise will come to pass. if you are truthful'. 27

28.   قُلۡ اِنَّمَا الۡعِلۡمُ عِنۡدَ اللّٰهِ وَاِنَّمَاۤ اَنَا نَذِيۡرٌ مُّبِيۡنٌ‏ ﴿۲۶﴾  Say you, 'the Knowledge of it is with Allah, and I am only a clear warner'. 28

29. فَلَمَّا رَاَوۡهُ زُلۡفَةً سِیْٓــَٔتۡ وُجُوۡهُ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا وَقِيۡلَ هٰذَا الَّذِىۡ كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تَدَّعُوۡنَ‏ ﴿۲۷﴾ Then when they will see it near at hand, the faces of the infidels will be vexed, and it will be said to them, 'this is what you used to ask for'. 29

30.  قُلۡ اَرَءَيۡتُمۡ اِنۡ اَهۡلَـكَنِىَ اللّٰهُ وَمَنۡ مَّعِىَ اَوۡ رَحِمَنَا ۙ فَمَنۡ يُّجِيۡرُ الۡكٰفِرِيۡنَ مِنۡ عَذَابٍ اَلِيۡمٍ‏ ﴿۲۸﴾ Say you, 'look to it, if Allah destroys me and those with me or has mercy on us, then who will protect the infidels from the painful torment'? 30

31. قُلۡ هُوَ الرَّحۡمٰنُ اٰمَنَّا بِهٖ وَعَلَيۡهِ تَوَكَّلۡنَا‌ۚ فَسَتَعۡلَمُوۡنَ مَنۡ هُوَ فِىۡ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِيۡنٍ‏ ﴿۲۹﴾  Say you, 'He is the Most Affectionate, we believed in Him and relied upon Him, then now you will know, who is in manifest error'. 31

32.  قُلۡ اَرَءَيۡتُمۡ اِنۡ اَصۡبَحَ مَآؤُكُمۡ غَوۡرًا فَمَنۡ يَّاۡتِيۡكُمۡ بِمَآءٍ مَّعِيۡنٍ‏ ﴿۳۰﴾  Say you, 'look to it, if your water in the morning go deep in the earth, then who would bring you water running before your eyes?' 32
