SURFACE FINISH
The art of treating the surface with a suitable covering material to make it
weather-resisting and decorative is called surface finishing. Examples:
Plasters, paints, varnishes, whitewash, color wash, distemper, etc.
02
PURPOSE OF SURFACE
FINISHES
The purpose of surface finish is to improve the surface texture, appearance,
and functionality of an object or material, enhancing its performance,
durability, and aesthetic appeal
03
POINTING
Pointing in surface finish involves filling
and finishing joints between
construction materials like bricks or
stones for a smooth appearance. It
enhances structural integrity, visual
appeal, and protects against weathering
and moisture.

Plastering is a construction technique used
to create a smooth, durable, and
aesthetically pleasing surface on walls and
ceilings. It involves the application of a
mixture, typically consisting of cement,
lime, sand, and water, known as plaster,
onto a substrate such as brickwork,
concrete, or wooden laths

STONE CRETE
PLASTER
Stone crete plaster is composed of a mix of
elements: cement, coarse aggregate
(usually crushed stone), fine marble
powder, hardener, and water. You can
change the look of the finished plaster by
making changes in the elements using
white cement instead of Gray cement, for
example, or using crushed colour glass in
place of crushed stone. These choices can
change the look of exposed aggregate
concrete dramatically.
EXPOSED AGGREGATE
PLASTER
Exposed aggregate plaster is a type of
decorative plaster finish used in
construction and architectural
applications. It involves applying a layer of
plaster or stucco mixed with aggregates
such as pebbles, crushed stone, or
decorative chips onto a surface, and then
removing the top layer to reveal the
embedded aggregates. This creates a
textured and visually appealing surface
with a unique pattern and texture.

GRIT WASH
PLASTER
This type of finish is produced by first
applying a 12mm thick coat over the which
is allowed to set for a day then a next coat
of cement solution in water is spread over
the surface and then mixture of cement
and chippings (2b, 2, 0, grade) in ratio of
1:2.5 is made and then dashed onto the
walls and after 1 or 2 hours it is washed
with a uniform spray of water.

Whitewashing is a simple and traditional
method of coating walls or surfaces with a
mixture of lime, water, and sometimes
additives like salt or glue. It's often used to
brighten and refresh surfaces, provide a
protective layer against moisture, and deter
pests. Whitewash creates a matte, opaque
finish and is commonly used on interior and
exterior walls of buildings, fences, and
other structures.

Paint is a complex mixture of pigments,
binders, solvents, and additives, each
serving a crucial role in transforming and
protecting surfaces. The selection of the
right paint color and finish allows for
customization in design projects, impacting
the ambiance of a space significantly.
Understanding the function of each
component helps in choosing paint that
meets specific project needs for both
aesthetic appeal and long-term
performance.

Oil-based Paint: These paints use oil, such as linseed oil, as the binder. They are durable,
provide good coverage, and have a glossy finish. However, they require longer drying times and
can emit strong odors due to the solvents used.
1.
Water-based Paint (Latex or Acrylic): Water-based paints use water as a solvent and acrylic or
latex as the binder. They dry quickly, emit fewer odors, and are easy to clean up with water.
They come in various finishes, including flat, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss.
2.
Enamel Paint: Enamel paints are oil-based or water-based paints that contain a high proportion
of resin, giving them a hard, durable finish. They are commonly used for metal surfaces and
areas that require high resistance to wear and tear.
3.
Acrylic Paint: Acrylic paints use acrylic resin as the binder and water as the solvent. They are
versatile, quick-drying, and available in a wide range of colors. They are often used for art
projects, crafts, and interior wall painting.

5. Epoxy Paint: Epoxy paints consist of epoxy resin and a hardener that chemically reacts
to form a tough, durable coating. They are highly resistant to chemicals, abrasion, and
moisture, making them suitable for floors, metal surfaces, and industrial applications.
6. Chalk Paint: Chalk paint is a type of water-based paint that contains chalk or calcium
carbonate, giving it a matte, chalky finish. It is popular for furniture painting and
decorative projects, as it can be easily distressed and customized.
7. Spray Paint: Spray paint is available in aerosol cans and is used for quick and even
application on various surfaces, including metal, wood, and plastic. It dries quickly and
provides a smooth, professional finish.
Varnish is a transparent or translucent
liquid coating applied to surfaces, primarily
wood, to enhance its appearance and
provide protection against moisture, wear,
and UV radiation. It consists of a mixture of
resin, solvent, and additives. Upon
application, the varnish dries to form a
hard, glossy, or matte finish, depending on
the desired effect.

The word cladding came into general use as
a description of the external envelope of
framed buildings, which clothed or clad the
building in a protective coating that was
hung, supported by, or secured to the
skeleton or structural frame as a jacket or
coat is hung from the shoulders as a
protective cladding.
